The List of Fate

There are things in this world that are impossible for our normal eyes to divulge. Things that are deeply hidden from this insensitive, abominable world; secrets and whispers of knowledge unknown to ordinary men, and the sudden deaths of the kings and queens all over the land. Chaos quickly spread in all the kingdoms.

Villages were being purged, fire burning through the thick of the night. Thick black smoke blocked out the moon and the stars as the villagers wailed and fled from the impending doom.

Not far away, a hooded figure was standing at the branch of one of the trees, hidden in the shadows, watching the commotion, anticipating to see someone: A horseman who brings death wherever he goes, mounting on his trusted steed, and stealing the light and life of the innocent. It was one of her tasks to eliminate such trash, whether they're innocent or guilty, rich or poor. She must get the job done.

The wind blew off the thick smoke and the invaders could be seen. Her eyes widened. She grabbed her stifling dagger and threw it at the horseman. The horseman cried in pain as his muscles became numb and blood was spilling out of his leg. She moved to her target with great speed and tried to chop his head off with her twin blades. But the horseman blocked her just in time with his spiky shield. She landed on her feet preparing for another strike, but halted when she was aware that she was being surrounded by the other knights of chaos, protecting the horseman. Her presence has been revealed.

"Do you really think you can beat me that easily, Dark Wraith?" The horseman laughed as he pulled the dagger out from his hemorrhaging leg. "It'll take more of you to take me down and my army."

"Don't worry, I'm not in a hurry," she said with conviction. "As long as I get the job done, the better."

"Really? You and what army?" the Chaos Knight glared and taunted her as his eyes burned with pride. But his numbing presence didn't mortify her.

"I don't need an army to bring you down, nor did I come here to chat." Quickly she drew out her twin blades, preparing to strike.

The Chaos Knight laughed. "You are amusing me, Dark Wraith. How are you going to get pass my horsemen and get to me?"

"With a quick strike!"

She rushed through the horsemen as they try to take a blow on her. But to no avail, she evaded their attacks as she anticipated their next move. She got through them and aimed for the head of the Chaos Knight. Again, he blocked her move with his shield and sent one of her blades flying far to the ground.

"Hah! You are useless with just one blade. Prepare to die!" The horsemen charged towards her. The Chaos Knight raised his brute sword and pulled her within a rift. She was surrounded once again, but their attacks were futile.

She leaped off the ground with her quick feet and unsheathed her Battle Fury midair. With a blink of an eye, blood spilled all over the battlefield. The horsemen disappeared like mists and the Chaos Knight trembled as he fell down his steed.

"H-How did you...?" He gasped at the top of his breath. "I had you! Impossible. You... How..?"

"You shouldn't have trusted your eyes, Chaos Knight." With a final strike, she took off his head and concealed back into the shadows again.

After a long and perilous venture back to the world beyond the veil, Mortred delivered the severed head of the Chaos Knight to the Veiled Oracle, proof of a successful assassination. Pleased with her remarkable spectacle, the Veiled Oracle took the head and placed it in one of the mysterious crates where the heads of those deemed to die were kept.

"Once again you have done well, Phantom Assassin. You never cease to amaze me." The Veiled Oracle praised her.

"All according to plan," she said.

The Veiled Oracle turned to her and handed her a small scroll. Mortred rolled it open. Written inside was another list of names - names of people who will meet their fate. And Mortred did not question why they deserve such a fate.

"The shadows is your ally, let the wind whisper your forbidden name as you eliminate the parasites from this world. Trust nobody but the shadows and the whispers in the wind."

An ominous wind blew and the blue mystic flames lit brighter from the torches on the walls. Mortred accepted the Veil Oracle's errand for her. She walked back into the shadows and left the world beyond the veil once more to cleanse the world from its never ending corruption.

Meanwhile, in the eastern part of the world, where the sun scorches one's skin to crisps, a wanderer stumbled upon an abandoned village. The blistering sun had led the villagers to their doom, but to the wanderer 'tis nothing but a walk in the park. She cautiously wandered around the sand-covered structures, until she found why she was there in the first place.
