Bago pa man mabuo ang Hangul (한글) korean people ( also know as Joseon 조선 that time ) used Hanja (한자).

Hiniram ng mga taga-Korea ang Hanja sa mga Chinese and incorporated into the Korean Language with korean pronounciation.

Hanja-mal (한자말) and Hanja-eo (한자어) refers to word that can be written with Hanja.

Hanja refers to Classical Chinese writing.

However, dahil nga sa pag-kakaiba ng Korean at Chinese language and the large number of characters needed to be learned. Nahirapang matuto ng pagsusulat ang mga nasa Lower Classes (who often didn't have privilege of education) gamit ang Chinese Characters.

Para masolusyunan ang problema, King Sejong The Great created the unique alphabet known as Hangul.

Agad namang kumalat ang Hangul sa korean at ginamit sa mga Common Classes and print populars novels that which where enjoyed by Common Classes.

With growing Korean Nationalism in the 19th Century, the Gabo Reformists' push the promotion of Hangul in schools.

Hangul displace Hanja as Korea's National Script.

Hanja is still used to a certain extend in South Korea where it is sometimes combined with Hangul but this method is slowly declining despite students learning Hanja in School.
