"Here's how we bring the Ark to the ground. Stage one," Sinclair began to go through his explanation of how he would blow up the Ark or something like that to bring it to the ground. I found it hard to focus on what he had to say because, to be quite honest, I didn't care. The only thing I cared about was the fact that I'd soon be heading to the ground, and I'd either make it there or die trying. Skylar squeezed my hand, refocusing my attention.
"...and some of us will be on those stations." My father was speaking. He must have just explained that not all the stations will make it to the ground, but I still thought that was a better alternative than just staying up here waiting to die. Out of the corner of my eye, I watched Skylar's face. She seemed worried, and past her I could see her father grow irritated. I hadn't told them this part of using the Ark as a big drop ship since I knew if I did, her father would've forced them to take the cyanide anyway. I had to get Skylar out of there alive, and now that she was I wouldn't let her out of my sight.
"So, how close are we gonna land to the kids?" Abby asked. Although I would prefer landing close to the 100 on the ground as we could, and as close to John and Neil as we could, I just wanted to make it to the ground. There was unlimited oxygen on the Earth, and I figured the sooner we got down there the better. Of course, landing within a day's walk of John would be nice perk. And of course just as close to the 100 would be good as well. If it wasn't for Neil though, I wouldn't care about any of them. They exiled John.
"As close as we can." Jaha finished up the meeting with assignment everyone to their stations for the launch. I wanted to cry when I heard Skylar and I would be separated, but I was sure Mecha station wouldn't mind having just one more passenger, and farm station wouldn't be hurt by losing just one passanger. I would sneak her on, I had to. At least then we'd either make it down together, or we'd die together. The ground was always a dream of both of ours, and I didn't know what I'd do if I made it down and she didn't. "Everyone report to your assigned station in 20 minutes. You may bring a few things, but only what you absolutely need. Meeting dismissed."
Skylar's parents were quickly by her side. "So I guess this is goodbye..." She gave me a small smile, but I could tell it was forced.
"Well I was actually thinking you could come to Mecha station with-" I began.
"That is out of the question Venus." My father's voice came from so close behind me I nearly jumped, not expecting him to be so close. "Everyone has their assigned stations, moving anyone now could be chaotic."
"Your father's right sweetie, but we'll see you on the ground." I could barely hear Skylar's mom as the tears welled up in both Skylar's and mine eyes. We both knew too well how slim the chances were of each individual station getting to the ground, let alone the chance of our two specific ones getting there without exploding or landing too fast. We quickly embraced each other in a tight hug, both letting the tears run down our faces. I could live with knowing we both would die or we both would live, but I could not live with the thought that one may die while the other lived on. Skylar had been my only true friend ever since I was a little girl. She was my first friend, and now she was the last one I had left.
I took a deep breath calming myself. 20 minutes wasn't a lot of time, and I was sure a lot of it was gone already. I still needed to figure out what few items I'd be taking and what parts of my life I'd be leaving behind. "May we meet again." The two of us let go of each other and walked our separate ways. I didn't know when I'd ever see her again, and I feared that it would be never.
---------------
I stood in the room where the culling had occurred. I told my father there was something I needed to do and that I'd meet him in Mecha station. We were about half way to our quarters when I realized there was only one thing I wanted to take down to Earth with me, and it wouldn't be in our quarters. Stuff from the memorial that had been set up to commemorate the culling were strewn throughout the room, probably from the explosion that happened when Diana Sydney took the Exodus ship. Even with the mess, it didn't take me too long to locate what I went there for.
