Chapter Five

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

It hurt, the blood gushed out and wouldn't stop.

"Mitch...." I sobbed.

My hair was a mess again. I couldn't seem to keep it contained.

As I brushed it, memories of Mitch kept coming back.

Where was all this coming from?

I didn't love Mitch. Mitch was a perv. Who needed him?

But at the same time, it would be heartless not to go help him.

That's me, heartless, so why did it matter?

I called Adam. I had to tell him that I wasn't coming.

"You on your way?" He asked.

"Actually, Adam, I have to tell you something,"

I whispereed.

"What? Can you wait until you get over here?" He asked urgently.

"No, I'm not coming,"

"What?! Mitch needs you! Don't you care about him?"

"No, Adam, I don't."

I hung up and threw my phone at the wall.

It landed with a loud thud and then I heard it hit the floor and shatter.

I grunted, then realized that it could be a good thing.

No more calls, no more texts...

I sighed with relief. Now I could live my life in peace.

Well, they still knew where I lived.

But they wouldn't... Would they?

No, they wouldn't stalk me like that. I had knives and I knew how to use them.

Plenty of knives. Sharp ones, at that.

Someone knocked at my door. I didn't feel like socializing.

I scrunched up my hair and yelled, "Nobody's home. Try again... Never."

"Brooklynn!" It was Jerome. Just what I needed.

"Ugh," I murmured.

~Jerome's POV~

The door to Brooklynn's apartment swung open and she stood there in the doorway.

She had blood trickling down her arm and smudged on her face.

Her hair was matted and tangled.

"Damn, girl. What have you been up to? Jumping in front of busses?"

"Jerome, I'm busy. Could you please leave?" She was trying to be calm instead of yelling at me to go away like she did Mitch.

Yes, I was there. I saw it all. I was waiting at the bottom of the stairs in case Mitch needed back-up.

"Brooklynn, you need to listen to me." I wasn't leaving, even if I had to crawl through her window.

"You have 5 minutes," She growled and looked at her watch.

"Can I come in?" I pleaded.

"Nice try, no. Time's ticking, I don't have all day. Is it really that urgent that you must come inside my house?"

"I guess not. Listen, I'm sorry--"

"Yeah, yeah. Apologies are just insincere ways of getting a girl back. I've had enough of it. It's been fun, Jerome. I'm glad I met you. Bye,"

She slammed the door in my face.

I'll admit, I started to cry. At first it was a soft cry, but it gradually grew into a desperate sob.

"I don't wanna hear it," She yelled through the door.

"But Brooklynn, just listen to me! For once! Maybe if you had tried that Mitch wouldn't have left you!"

The door swung open again.

"What did you just say?"
