"You should come watch me play. You'll have fun." I said to Dark. He just looked at me, and rolled his eyes. "I'm not really the athletic type. Spots bore me." "You won't be playing though. I mean come on, don't you wanna support me? This tournament is really important. If we win, we win the state championship. We've worked so hard to get here and it'd mean a lot if you were there to support me." He looked at me flatly. "I don't even know what kind of game you're playing." "Volleyball." I replied. "What?" "You don't know what that is?" I asked, kind of surprised. Dark came up here with a lot of knowledge about the human world...and he's been up here for quite awhile now, so he knows much more than what he did initially...I figured that demons played sports...or that at least he'd seen a volleyball game. I mean, young women in short shorts diving after a ball, getting covered in sweat and sand, that has Dark written all over it. "Nope." "I've gotta ask: do demons even play sports?" "Not the ones humans do." "Care to elaborate?" "Not really. You really don't want to know what kind of sports we play. You'd find them...unpleasant." I shrugged. "So do you know about any human sports?" He rolled his eyes. "Yeah, duh." he said. "I know what football is, I know what basketball is, I know what hockey is...all of that stuff. I have a friend who plays hockey...she taught me how to ages ago. I just don't know what volleyball is and frankly, it sounds boring as fuck. Most sports are. The only reason I ever gave half a fuck about hockey is because I heard you could fist fight your opponents." I put my hands on my hips. "I'll have you know it's a blast!" I said. "Well, I'm glad you enjoy it. Now go play your game and win, okay?" "Dark, come on. I've always been there for you." "Name one time." he implored. I drew a blank. "Alright, well if you needed me to, I would be there for you." "Good to know, I'll keep that in mind." he said, standing. "Dark..." I said. He looked at me. "Let me tell you something about volleyball that you might find interesting." He sighed. "You can try." he said. "Well, my team is nothing but women. College age women at that, and some of them are total sluts." He raised an eyebrow. "You'd better not be bullshitting." he said. "I'm not. In addition to that, our uniforms are a bit...skimpy." "Go on." he replied. "Well, we wear these black camisoles that dip down pretty low, and black and white shorts that would be better suited as panties, not to mention-" "Alright, I've heard enough. When's your game?" I beamed. "Tonight at 7!" I said. "I'll be there." he replied. "I knew you'd come around." I said, hugging him tightly. "I'm always around." he replied. "You'd better not be lying to me." he called after me. "I'm not. I have no reason to lie to you. Trust me, you're gonna love this."
It's kinda easy to spot Dark. It doesn't matter how hot it is, he's always wearing black clothes. More often than not, he wears black pants and some kind of hoodie when he goes out. That's how I was able to spot him in the sea of people who came to the tournament. He was sitting right out front, discreetly smoking a cigarette. I don't think anyone cared, the tournament was outside. I waved to him subtly and he winked, checking out our uniforms. I was geniunely glad to see him there, seeing as how none of my other friends could make it. My own parents weren't even able to come cheer me on. I didn't want to tell him that out of fear that he'd make me a necklace out of their teeth or something. For someone as passive, dismissive, negative, and cynical as him he does care deeply about some. Maybe a bit too deeply at times. I watched the opposing team take their positions and shortly after the game began. I threw glances Dark's way every now and again, and he was definitely watching, but I think he was more interested in the women than the game. Fine by me, at least he came. He noticed me looking up at him and smiled a bit. He rarely genuinely smiles...I took it to heart that he smiled at me. Blush crept over my face, and I had to look away in order to focus on the game like I needed to. Things were NOT looking good for us. The opposition had already managed to score on us twice in a short amount of time. I growled in frustration. Dark noticed and looked at me, suggesting something with his eyes. I shook my head subtly. I'm no cheater. He rolled his eyes at me and went back to studying my teammates. God, I hoped we could pull this off. I knew how much winning state meant to everyone. We'd never been this close either. The other team hadn't been this close either: the competition was fierce. Our team regrouped and began playing again, harder than we ever had before. We tied the game and celebrated quietly while playing out the last few minutes. With 30 seconds left, I scored and we managed to hold the other team off until the clock ran out. As stoked as I was to have finally won that title I'd been after for so long, my focus was on Dark, who was less than impressed by all of the confetti and fanfare around him. He looked positively annoyed, blowing pieces of confetti away from his face periodically while resting his chin on his hand. I laughed. How typical. I approached him and he gave me a hug. "Good job. You won..." he said. "I know, isn't it great?" "For you, yes...and I'm glad you won for what it's worth, but this fanfare...is it necessary?" "State is a big deal, Dark." I said, taking him by the hand. "I see that." he replied. "Where are you taking me?" "To introduce you to my teammates." He perked up at the sound of that. "Finally." he said. I slugged him with my free hand. "Be easy, Dark." "Nah, I'm always difficult...but your teammate, the one with the black hair, she looks easy." I held in a laugh. "Only because she is." I said quietly. "You are so mean to these ladies." he said, pretending to have innocent intentions. "Oh fuck off. The truth is the truth. Besides, I never said she wasn't a good person...she is." He rolled his eyes. "Just make with the introductions. I have plans." I looked up at him. "Plans?" I asked. "You never said that. My teammates and I are going out for drinks, and I was hoping you'd come with us." "You'll see what my plans are soon enough." I introduced Dark to my teammates, and as expected the loose ones were all but hanging onto his arms. Much to my surprise, he didn't seem interested in them though. "You sick or something?" I asked, as we walked to my car. "No, why?" "You just had a bunch of women throwing themselves at you and you didn't even move." "I have something...well, someone else on my mind right now."
