She ran along the side of the path, eyes sparkling with mischief, golden hair flowing out behind her. A small giggle escaped her mouth as she continued her little escapade down the forest trail. Her bright silvery-green eyes shined as she set her sights on a small cave that was hidden by a thick wrap of vines. She skipped towards the small entrance in the side of the cavern, smiling to herself as she imagined the surprise that the caves' inhabitant might get for her visit. It had been too long since she had last come, and she was looking forward to seeing her friend.
She wore a simple flowery dress, that went down to her knees. A pair of sandles were upon her small feet, while her head was adorned with a flower crown of daises. In her hand, was another flower crown, slightly bigger to fit her friend. This one was specially made by her, woven with an assortion of flowers that she had found throughout the garden that took up the backyard of her house. She had carefully cut each one from their plant, then using them to create the present.
She quietly crept along the curtain of leaves until she reached the end. She stifled her giggles, and listened for the usual humming of her friend. Peeking around the corner, she scanned the cavern for any sign of life. It was quite large, with swirling colours painting the walls. A worn rug was strewn on the floor, and the couch was splattered with paint. Tiptoeing around the edge of the warm, golden glow that came from a large candle, she quietly made her way to the main entrance, a large open cut into the rock that her friend entered and exited her home from.
Her friend was a strong enthusiast of art, and loved to paint. She would often come to find them standing on a stool, reaching up the cave walls to paint big, beautiful pictures across the surface. Her friend had sparkling green eyes, that lit up whenever they had ideas, and red hair framed their face. They usually dressed in a top and jeans, clothes that wouldn't matter if they got paint on them. Sometimes, her friend would let her help, giving her a brush and instructions to fill in a certain area with blue, or red, or yellow. She loved painting with her, just having them around made her feel at ease and relaxed. Something she didn't feel much of at home, where she had to be constantly on guard, otherwise...
Whispers. Voice refracted around the cave walls, reaching her ears. She paused in her search for her friend. Who was here? The only person that lived here was alone, for they had told her that they never had many visitors, until she came. Ducking around the corner into a crevice she had found on a previous visit --she was playing hide'and'seek with her friend, a memory that she was fond of. She had found this when her friend had been it, counting in their melodious voice. She had been uncontrollably giggling, and didn't manage to stay hidden for long, but afterwards they smiled and congratulated her on finding a great place. She slowed her breathing as the voices became closer and clearer.
"Rachel?" The first voice loudly asked the silent stone walls.
"I don't think she's here. Should we wait, or..?" A second voice chimed in, seemingly talking to the first.
"Maybe. But who knows when she'll be back!" The first one replied.
"We should just leave her cave alone and come back when we know she's here." A third voice spoke up, making her jump slightly. Her shoulder brushed one of the many shelves set up around the room, and a small empty tin clattered to the floor. Silence reigned over them.
"Rachel?" The first voice spoke again, softer this time.
"She's never that quiet." The third voice whispered to themselves. She started to tremble, struggling to keep her breathing even.
"Who's there!" The first voice called out, unspoken threats lacing their voice. The third one snickered quietly.
"What?" The first one asked, confusion replacing the authority that filled it not even a few seconds ago.
"Percy, you think that this unknown.. thing.. is just gonna come out 'cause you said." The third one retorted, a grin evident through his voice. The second one chuckled quietly.
"Shut up Nico! You're not helping!" The first voice shouted, irritation shook his voice.
"Show yourself, Trespasser!" The second one yelled into the cave, amusement filling his voice, but it was quickly replaced with hostility. The silence was heavy on her shoulders, and she felt like she was going to freeze from the cold stillness. She stilled all movements, catching her breath as almost unnoticeable footsteps paced across the cave floor. Her heart about to burst from her little chest, she quietly slipped from the crevice. Padding towards the vine-covered crack in the wall, she quickly glanced around. Feeling the cool leaves against her skin, she brushed past the hanging plants, stepping into the calm forest.
Once she thought she was far enough away from the voices, she ran. Ran, the flowers once atop her head blown away in the wind, her dress fluttering behind her. She ran all the way to the garden that was her backyard, the same one that she had carefully cut the flowers used to make her friends crown. The crown. She hurriedly looked down at her hand to see that she was no longer holding the beautiful flower crown she had made. Glancing back to the forest, she stared into it, heartbroken that she managed to lose the one gift she had felt was worth her friend's time. Sending one last sad look towards the trees, her lip quivering, she turned and hesitantly stepped into the house.
"I'm sorry."
