"Trust me, it'll work out" said the male. I shook my head and looked up. I couldn't see the man, nor could I figure out where the voice was coming from. It was dark all around me, almost as if it was one solid mass, and the only light came from directly above me, shining a low, warm glow over me. The man's voice seemed to be resonating from the darkness, from every corner and every direction, but also as if it was just right in front of me. Wherever I turned, he was there. I looked down, fiddling with my hands as I fell into thought.
I sat there for a long moment, contemplating his words.
"Well... if I can't trust myself..." I trailed off. I looked up from my hands, staring into the darkness.
"But... there's another thing" I said.
"Oh?" he answered, sounding truly interested in what I had to say.
"If you are both Lefty and Righty, mixed as one being... what do I call you?" I asked. There was a pause. I heard him take a breath, as if wanting to say something, then he exhaled softly.
"Well... you see, it's a bit more complicated than that. I'm more like... you. I'm neither Righty nor Lefty. Not anymore. When they disappeared, I lost my form. They might return, but I will no longer have control of them. I kind of... formed a separate, third personality. Just a voice in the back of your head." he explained. I tilted my head slightly. My expression was neutral, and so was my voice.
"...That doesn't answer my question, though" I said. I heard him chuckle, the sound was almost melodic.
"Just call me...-"
I sat up suddenly, gasping for breath. My vision was blurry and I suddenly felt a ton heavier. There was a sharp pain in the back of my shoulder, and the air around me was cold and bright.
"Wh-whuh...?" I blabbered. My vision started clearing and I saw a splash of blue and black, with a separate yellow blob next to it. There was a pressure on my shoulders, and I felt myself going down. I shook my head stubbornly and tried to push the things off of me. My movements were slow and clumsy and I wasn't really sure if I made contact with the blobs.
"N-nuh... no..! Luh-me... lemme... gh...go..!" I mumbled. My tongue felt dead, just a chunk of flesh in my mouth. My body felt numb, save for the stinging on the back of my shoulder. I heard noises, but I couldn't make it out. As if someone was speaking underwater. I frowned in confusion, then squinted my eyes, trying to make out the blobs. Soon, after blinking a few times, I could make out other features. I could see two dark spots on the blue blob, and red lines on the yellow one. I frowned and blinked a few times again.
"J...ack...? 'oodee...?" I mumbled. The yellow blob moved, resembling a nod. I lifted my hand and rubbed my eyes, relaxing a bit.
"Whuh... hap...pun...?" I continued. Sounds started clearing up, and I could hear metal clinking and occasional footsteps.
"I don't know yet. I found you in the Meadow, passed out and bleeding. I called Slender and he brought us here so we could fix you." Hoodie said. I laid still for a long while, thinking over the situation.
"Numb..." I muttered
"Anesthetics. Don't worry, it'll wear off soon" Jack said. I nodded slowly, then looked up and stared at the ceiling. I didn't really feel dizzy or anything. Just numb. Maybe this is how Toby feels. I could get use to this feeling. Numb with no pain whatsoever.
I turned my head and scanned the room, trying to figure out where I am. I saw hazy white walls and a bloodstained floor. I saw cupboards and objects glittering in them. 'The OR,' I thought.
"S..Sle...Slender...?" I asked softly, then turned my face to Jack and Hoodie.
"Outside. His weird aura was affecting the equipment." EJ said. I blinked slowly, then lifted my hands, flexing my fingers a bit. I sat up as soon as I could feel my fingers again. Hoodie and Jack didn't stop me this time, so I stretched and turned my body, my legs dangling over the side of the table. I licked my lips a few times, then turned my head to Jack and Hoodie again.
"What happened? Why does my shoulder hurt?" I asked. I had full control over my tongue and lips again.
They exchanged glances, then EJ turned and picked up a piece of paper from the counter behind him. He handed it to me and I took it without hesitation. The paper was a photograph of someone's back with a symbol carved into it. It kind of reminded me of two simple drawings of eyes, but they overlapped each other, one vertical, one horizontal. I looked at EJ.
"That is carved into your shoulder" he answered my unspoken question.
"What is it? What does it mean?" I said, tilting my head slightly. I saw Hoodie tense a bit.
"It... doesn't really have a name, but around here, we just call it the Severance Rune. *(cover page)*" He paused for a moment.
"You can't tell your dad. He's gonna freak out, and..." he continued, only to stop again. He shook his head and looked at me. "Point is... it's gonna end badly"
I stared at him for a long while, then slowly turned my head back down to look at the photograph. For a long time, I just stared at it in total silence. Even my thoughts have gone quiet.
"...What is it for...?" I croaked softly, sounding like I haven't used my voice in ages.
They both stayed silent. I looked up at them and slightly raised my voice.
"What does it do?" I asked. Hoodie shook his head and started talking as if I didn't ask.
"Your dad really can't know, though. You'll have to lie. Say you've been stabbed." He suggested.
"If it can heal without scars, you'll be fine" EJ added.
"What. Does. It. Do?" I asked, carefully phrasing each word. They exchanged glances, then simultaneously sighed in defeat.
"We don't know yet" Hoodie muttered. I frowned.
"What do you me-?!"
"It has many uses, but it depends on what the user uses it for." EJ interrupted. I stared at him for a long while, then just sighed.
"Fine. How do you two plan on hiding this from my dad?"
"Well, you lie. And your thoughts are kinda blocked off from him, yeah?" Hoodie suggested. I shook my head.
"No, but he won't pry. He takes too much pride in being a gentleman, so he won't just invade my space." I said. Now I see why people say Pride is a sin. It's a very helpful sin in this case, though.
"...I hope you're right..." Hoodie muttered. I nodded, and EJ leaned against a wall, probably contemplating something... smart.
For a long while, we sat in silence. The only noise present was the soft hum of the machines. I looked at the boys, who were looking down, contemplating our situation most likely, and gave a half-smile. When I spoke, my voice was soft, yet joking.
"...on a scale from Asexual to Offenderman, how fucked are we?"
