Salty sweat streams down my throat, making me splutter. Somewhere far away I hear my coach Elspeth shouting at me.. to go faster and faster still. I can't do it any more. My world goes black.
That evening I'm sat swaddled in blankets in front of the TV. All that they seem to be interested in is... " Future Young Great Britain Athlete Collapses During Race" Angry I fumble for the control. I bury my head further and further into the blankets. I want to wake up from this nightmare, Elspeth recommending me to GB. But I think now they already know about me. There's a knock on the front door. I wearily reach for the latch, rubbing my eyes. What is outside shocks me. The GB coach. I cough waiting embarrassed for my mum. Finally she ambles to the door, I definitely take after my Dad. I think she's shocked too but nevertheless she shoes me away as she talks.
I wait impatiently in my room pacing around on my wobbling legs. But after I while I hear the door slam. The feet on the stairs quick and before I know it my mum's in my room shouting at me.
"You did it" she shouts now breathless after her dash up the stairs. "They've decided to take you on!"
I close my eyes in victory. And collapse on a heap of joy on my bed. That night it took me an age to fall asleep, crazy thoughts rushing through my head. I'm so excited. All my hard work has finally paid off! 😀
