Enjoy!I didn't need to open my eyes to figure out I was lying on a bed. The scent of paper, like the one from an open book, filled the room. No doubt was I in my cozy and homey room.
How my room was decorated, and the fact that there was an enormous bookcase, filled with life-changing books, propped up against one of the walls, was all my idea. Other than cooking, decorating was also my passion.
My entire room was designed by me, a present from my parents on my 15th birthday. Mom and Dad decided to let me spice up my room, the place where I spent a reasonable amount of time in. They had pulled a couple of strings to hire some painters and designers, who would do all of the work themselves. I put a quick stop to that, however.
I settled on cadet gray cans of paint, that would be smudged and painted to perfection onto the walls of my room. They might have been a couple of shades too dark, as said my mother, but that was my own decision I made. One I didn't regret.
My room was already covered in personal belongings, so I didn't add in too much new stuff. The only visible new ascent was a massive, antique-styled, wooden bookcase. Since that was the way most homes were decorated, I decided to follow along with the public's decor senses. At least I didn't have to make regular trips to the library, longing for the presence of books.
When I opened my eyes, I couldn't see the slightest bit of light. Judging by the color of the sky that I could make out from my window, it was sometime between late night and early dusk.
How long had I been sleeping?
My tranquil mood suddenly dissolved into thin air when I remembered the conversation with my parents. I felt around on my forehead for a bruise, hoping there wasn't one there and that it had all been a dream. Sadly, I immediately winced, as a bump crawled underneath my fingers.
There was a mild breeze in the air when I realized my window was slightly open. It was then I heard a faint whisper talking over the wind. Through the crack in the window, a pair of glinting eyes frantically looked around, then landed on me. I recognized those sparkling amber eyes.
After a moment, two legs climbed through the window, and soon enough, there was a person standing in front of me. The figure stood tall, towering over me. There wasn't a speck of daylight, but I recognized him, even in the darkness.
"Coltren!" I yelled in a whisper. "I hope you know there is a curfew that everyone needs to follow around here!"
Coltren smiled down at me, causing my entire body to melt. I fought the need to wrap my arms around him. Hell, I wanted to kiss him. These feelings have been blossoming in my heart for nearly a year.
It was something I couldn't control, something I hadn't wanted at first. But at the moment, I was glad to have someone who could comfort me.
"Yeah, I know, sweetheart," he breathed, wrapping his arms around me. "I just needed to see you."
I froze for a split second, feeling a bit of discomfort from all of the energy he was putting into the hug. Even though we had both confessed our love for each other a while ago, I felt like a complete mess whenever Coltren said the L-word and showed some affection. I had doubts about our relationship every now and then, but after looking into his eyes, I would forget about all my worries.
Oh, God. His eyes.
Coltren Reyner had eyes of an angel.
They were a honey color. From a distance, you wouldn't be able to see it, but up close there were hints of light brown. Whenever I gazed up into them, they reminded me of a fresh cup of cappuccino.
"Harper? Honey bear? Are you-?" Coltren paused and an amused grin pulled at his lips. "Are you drooling?"
I quickly pulled away and turned my back towards him. Even though it was night and he couldn't see it, Coltren knew I was blushing. I just couldn't help turning into a tomato every time he was near me.
Sometimes I just looked up into his eyes or examined his features. It might have been a bit creepy, but you can't blame me.
"I don't want to get you or myself into any sort of trouble, so I'll just be brief. I'd love to have you over for dinner tomorrow evening. My parents and little brother left for Trevaan to visit a couple of family members. Apparently, they're having a tough time, and I'm the man of the house now," Coltren said with a hint of amusement in his voice.
He wiggled his dark uneven eyebrows at the end, which caused me to burst out with laughter, accidentally falling into his bulky arms.
Coltren started trailing off about tomorrow and what time I should come over. Oh, and also about an excuse to make up an excuse to my parents.
Yes, that's right, my parents didn't know about the butterflies that fluttered in my stomach at the thought of a certain boy. Actually, I would call the fluttering of butterflies something more realistic, like a category 5 tornado.
I didn't focus on the words spilling out of his mouth, but on the movement of his lips. Each forming word made his lips turn in various directions.
I felt the strong desire to pull him closer and grab at his shirt's collar. He soared over me, so this was the only way to get his attention.
A light pressure pushed on my lips, encouraging me. Coltren's kisses made me forget about our surroundings and focus on the one thing in front of me. Him.
I had to remind myself that it was past curfew, a law Rvélia made to guarantee safety towards its residents. My mind told me to stop, but my heart screamed at me to do anything, but break away. Eventually, I had to catch my breath, so I pulled away.
Deep and quick breaths came out of my lips. I immediately focused on my feet, a bit embarrassed by the situation. When I looked up, however, I realized I was once again alone.
Walking up to the window, I saw a dim shadow in the dark and smiled to myself. I closed the window and felt a sudden feeling of warmth on my neck.
I fell asleep grinning like an idiot that night, hoping to see a dream about me and Coltren, together.
