Chapter one

A beginning

"Sarah! Time to get up" a voice could be heard yelling, making said girl jolt awake in her bed. Sarah checked the time on her alarm clock and screamed.

"Dad! I told you to wake me up earlier today!" As she yelled she hopped off her bed and ran to the bathroom. She stopped in front of the mirror and started brushing her hair.

"I'm sorry dear! Old age is deteriorating my memory" her dad shouted in response, as Sarah tied her hair in her usual ponytail with the black ribbon given to her by her best friend. She grabbed her toothbrush as she responded.

"We both know you're not that old!" She quickly brushed her teeth as her father took his sweet time responding. She washed her brush and pulled some of her makeup out of the mirror cabinet.

"How old are you sweetheart?" Her dad asked, making Sarah hesitate when grabbing her light pink lipgloss.

"Dad, I'm 16!" She yelled, putting said lipgloss on her lips and grabbing her eyeliner.

"Well, that proves that I'm old!" Her dad responded as she winged her first eye. Years of practice made her swift with her makeup. She rolled her eyes and didn't bother responding, jogging back over to her room to put on an appropriate outfit for her mood at the moment.

"Hurry up! I thought you were in a hurry!" She heard her dad yell as she threw on a light pink button up. She again chose to ignore him in favour of throwing on some other -probably pink- clothes. She grabbed her bag and ran down the stairs, skipping every second step.

"Thanks dad," she said as she chugged the milk he had left for her.

"Why you choose to drink it after you brush your teeth I will never know" he mumbled and chuckled to himself. He grabbed his car keys off the counter and turned the van on, as Sarah grabbed her jacket.

"It tastes better that way. Mom agreed." Sarah responded, opening the door for her dad to walk through. He paused for a millisecond before continuing, Sarah almost not catching it. She bit the inside of her cheek and cringed, forgetting that he was still in the grieving stage. She followed him out the door and into the van, and watched the bunny in their yard run away from the loud noises.

They drove in relative silence, occasionally making comments about the radio hosts of whatever station that was on. They arrived at a park two blocks from her school and she got out of the car, going to the swings. She waved goodbye and her dad blew a kiss.

A loud alarm rang through the house, waking Emily and her mother in the next room, but not her dad. Never her dad.

The two girls got out of bed and exited their rooms.

"G'morning" her mom says and nods.

"Morn'" she responds and the two glance to their right for a second before springing into action. Adeline, Emily's mother, goes down to start breakfast while Emily herself goes to their bathroom to take a fast shower.

When she finishes her shower she dries herself and gets dressed, then she jogs down the stairs as she hears her mom call for her.
