Chapter 8

Come on Lexi, one more flight. I brace myself as I bounce down the last flight of stairs. I broke my glasses on the first. Mrs.Teans rushes over with panic spread across her face.

"What happened?" She asks.

"Untie me, untie me!" I rush her. Once she unties my hands, I untie my left foot while she does my right. "If Alexis asks where I went, you do not know, alright?" She nods her head. She runs back behind her desk and takes out her inhaler.

I run out to my car in the parking lot. Why did I have to park so far back? Shoot, she took my phone. I speed out the parking lot but stop when I see a silhouette ahead of me. I jerk forward, stopping a few feet in front of them. Alexis grumbles before launching at my car. I should of kept driving.

I back up and she slips off then I speed away. Thank goodness she always parks on the second floor. You think you know someone until they're desperately trying to kill you. Halfway home I see lights. Red and blue. Fuck my life.

I don't have time for this. Instead, I keep driving. The police car speeds up and is hot on my tail. I passed two freaking red lights. Guess who's gonna be here to even pay those. Not me. They're not going to stop following me, and I definitely don't want them to make it to my house.

Ok Lexi, you got this. It's not that hard in the movies. I was going eighty but I slow down to twenty and jump out the car, letting it drive itself down the road. It's around eight and already dark so I hide in the bushes. Would have been cooler if I jumped out at eighty miles per hour, but hey, I'm still alive. Ok sense of direction, don't fail me now.

I go through the woods, hoping I can imagine where my apartment would be. After a fifteen-minute walk, I see the café that's not too far from my house. I run across the street when I see no cars.

"Hey." Someone grabs my shoulder. I turn around and see the same officer that stopped me. Crap.

He gave me an entire lecture on jaywalking. I'd never thought someone could talk about such a simple concept for so long. He kept telling me stories about how his members got hit.

"Be safe, alright? Have a nice day." He walks into the café, but bumps into someone. Alexis! I didn't even wait for us to make eye contact before I bolted down the street. In a few minutes I was near my apartment.

"Hold the door!" I tell the guy walking out. He scrambles to catch it and holds it open for me. It shuts and I hear Alexis trying to forcefully open the door. I turn my knob and it's locked so I repeatedly knock on the door.

"He-"

"We have to go! Alexis is trying to kill me!" He shoves everything that he was doing in his bookbag then runs into my room.

"Danielle, wake up!" I hear him yell. Glad he invited her over. I'm guessing she wasn't pleasant company since she came and fell asleep. "We're leaving now." He tells her.

"What?" She rubs her eyes sleepily. I don't have time to waste for explaining. I grab her hand and we sprinted to the door, only to be stopped by gunpoint.

"You really thought you could just run away?" Alexis scoffs. Danielle grabs the gun and points it at her. "I know you're not gonna shoot me. You don't have the guts." She rolls her eyes.

"Watch me." We all watched in anticipation, but Danielle did nothing!

"Give me that." Alexis snatches the gun back, but when she turns to shoot, Kev and I already ran out the porch door. Danielle was with us by the time she turned back. We scrambled down the stairs and ladder and rushed to the bus stop.

"Why are we waiting for a bus?!" Kevin throws his hands up.

"Long story short, I had to abandon my car. Besides the bus should be here...." I look at my watch then back up to see the bus approaching. "now." We take the seats in the front. We all let out sighs of relief once the doors closed and we were on the way. From the next stop, it was a thirty minute walk.

Kevin finished the last touches on the bus. We started running to get there faster. Alexis could be anywhere. I'm not taking any chances to relax.

"Once we get there, we won't be in the same places. Our bodies will wake up in different places. We meet up near the green light-" Danielle was cut off by a bullet barely missing her.

"Go, go, go!" Kevin yells and we all jump. I hear a few more shots until I feel myself falling. I grip onto the adapter making sure it doesn't slip out my hand. I can see Kevin smiling at me and give me a thumbs up until we go deep enough where it's pitch black.

Memories started to come back to me. I faintly remembered my family. My mom, stepdad, my big brother. I remember all the fun times we had, and how happy I was. The memory of the day starts to come back to me as well.

"Lexi, your light!" Kevin shouts snapping me out of my nostalgia. His light was beeping too. I quickly pushed my button. I felt these strange sensations until they all stopped. My body stopped too. I was in a bed.
