0.02 Walking with Billy
Alani plugged her headphones in her ears when she walked out of school. She didn't want to hear anything. She looked down at the floor, to avoid looks. Alani was scared on how her parents were going react, hearing that their second favorite daughter received detention. They probably wouldn't even care. Her older sister, Kala, probably did something amazing at college and her parents will praise it for the next week or so. The name meant princess so of course, she was going to get all the attention. Sometimes, Alani felt like her parents looked at her just as a mistake. A girl who was always going up and down with her grades. It wasn't her fault she was graced with dyslexia.
"Alani!"
Billy stood in front of her, saying her name, snapping her to reality.
Alani took out her headphones and continued walking as Billy joined walking with her. She responded, "Billy, when someone has their headphones in, most of the time they don't want to talk."
"So what happened? Were you suspended? Expelled? I heard that people who get suspended in high school have a harder time when being accepted-"
"I just got saturday detention," Alani interrupted, "Four weeks. That's it."
"Awesome! I won't be there alone."
Alani replied, "Yes, we will be apart of the Breakfast Club."
"Breakfast Club? What is detention now a club and we eat breakfast? That sounds better. I love chocolate chip pancakes with whipped cream."
"Billy, it was a joke. It's a name of a movie," Alani explained.
"Oh."
He sighed, looking at the ground. Alani knew how hard it was for Billy to understand things. She understood. It was like her trying to read. Alani wrapped her arm around Billy's shoulder. She was the only one who could touch him, the only one he allowed.
"It's fine. Not everyone knows movies."
Billy nodded, agreeing with her. The two continued to walk to their house. While they were walking, Alani heard something coming from behind. She looked behind to see a guy on a bicycle, heading towards them. Alaini didn't know how they weren't noticing. Quickly, she pushed Billy away from her, making way for the biker. She recognized him. It was Jason Scott. She heard from other students that his car was wrecked after the prank.
"Hey, watch where you're going!" Alani shouted, "The kids from Stranger Things can bike better than you!"
She wasn't sure that he heard. It didn't matter.
"I'm guessing Stranger Things is a movie?"
Alani laughed as she put her arm around Billy once again, "Come on, let's go home."
After she dropped Billy off at home, Alani entered into her house. Of course, the door was open. Her parents never did. Her sister use to always do it but now since she was at Harvard, she couldn't do it. Alani did it herself. She locked the door behind her before walking more into the house. Alani could hear the voices coming from the kitchen. She followed them and found her parents, looking at paper. Her mother was crying and her father was hugging her.
"She is doing so well there," her mother said to her father.
Her father sighed, "Not like Alani here. Her dyslexia isn't helping."
"Anyway to cure it?"
"We've tried, honey."
Oh, so that's all they carried about. Curing her dyslexia just for her grades? For her to be as good as Kala? She sighed, quietly making her way upstairs to the room. Alani entered her room and shut the door. She leaned against it. Alani slowly fell down. She was never good for them wasn't she? For no one? Only Billy. Billy was the only one. He was like the brother she never had.
She stood up, wiping a solo tear from her eye before getting into bed. Alani didn't care if it was three in the afternoon, she just wanted to sleep, dream. Dream of a place where no one judged her or Billy, a place where she had more people to care about her but that was only in her imagination.
