The sun beamed through the third floor window. Alphonse had fallen asleep on the ground. She was cold, and everything hurt. She was in no mood to eat, even though she never ate the second half of her sandwich yesterday. She didn't even want to see Mr. Charlie today. All she wanted was to get out of that room.
She climbed out of the window, still shaking with no energy left. She shut the windows and tried to use a book to keep it from opening again in the wind. It was good enough for now.
She put her hands on the window sill and tried to slowly let her feet down to the next window. Her arms gave in, unable to hold her up. She slid down, her jaw hitting the sill of the window, and her feet bending forward where they were supposed to land. She fell back, but she knew better than to try to use her hands to catch herself. She landed right on her back.
She had already fallen enough times that month. Somehow, it didn't hurt. Nothing hurt. She still felt shaky, but she neither felt nor found any new injuries from her fall.
She sat up, and dusted herself off. In doing so, she found a caterpillar on her hand. Instead of trying to get it off in a flinch of disgust, like she knew Mr. Charlie would've, she looked at it as if it was the whole world. Alphonse couldn't remember anything about yesterday. She could only remember her best memories. Although she knew this was strange, she was preoccupied with the caterpillar.
She ran her finger along it, as if to pet it. "Oh no!", she exclaimed, "You've been out all night in the rain!". She held the bug carefully in her hand and ran indoors. The doors swung wide open with ease, and then closed just as easily.
Alphonse sat criss-cross in the middle of the room and looked at the creature in her hand. "Oscar. Do you like that name? Oscar." She smiled with delight looking at Oscar. He didn't seem to want to crawl out of her hand. He quite liked it there. Alphonse noticed something weird. Oscar was crawling around in a pattern. What was this? Is he sick? Can't he move right? She studied the movements and began to recognize letters. O... S...C...A...R.
What in the world? Alphonse was a bit curious but mostly felt a rush of excitement. She bounced up and down.
"You can understand me? Oh my goodness, Oscar! Um.. what do I say?! Holy cow!" She couldn't believe her eyes. It was the most amazing thing in the entire world.
"How are you, Oscar? Are you hurt?"
G...O...D. God? No, he meant good. Oh, she was so excited! Calm down, calm down, she thought to herself.
