Chapter 5:
Jake's pov.
We walked in silence. The girl wasn't talking, fine with me. I didn't want to give her a tour in the first place anyways. I glanced at her, she was taller than average, with her dark hair in a ponytail and walking in a proud way. Her eyes were a mix between grey and brown, and they reminded me of a predator's, maybe a wolf. They were intelligent and bright. Normally I wouldn't care about new campers, but she seemed different. She turned to me and her eyes narrowed. "What?" She asked me. "I didn't say anything." I snapped back. Nobody has ever messed with me before, and I'm going to make sure that this girl knew that she can't mess with me. "I'm not blind or retarded, you know. You were staring at me, what is it?" She snapped back. Damn. Now that someone IS arguing with me, I actually don't know what to say. "Um, those are the washrooms." I pointed awkwardly, losing all of my cool. Jacelyn looks amused. "Why, thank you, for that helpful information." She grinned sarcastically. I almost smiled. Then suddenly, Jacelyn was shoved on to the ground.
In front of us stood Krissie, the head of the Athena cabin. She always gave new campers a hard time. Actually, not just them, everyone in camp. But no one ever stood up to her. Due to my reputation at camp, she never bothered me. Jacelyn got up from the ground and slowly exhaled. She looked calm, but this was maybe more dangerous than rage. "Look what we have here, a new camper! Would you like to end up in the lake or get your face smashed in a toilet?" Krissie smirked. I see Jacelyn's fists clenching at her sides. This wasn't good. I know that Jacelyn is not the type of girl to just stand there and take this, she's gonna do something. But a new camper like her couldn't possibly beat Krissie, the best fighter at camp. I tapped her lightly. "Jacelyn? You can't fight her, okay? You might get hurt." Usually I'm arrogant and cold and ignored all the girls. But I'm impressed by Jacelyn already due to her daring personality. Now I'm worried about her safety. "That's right." Krissie sneered. "You will be sorry if you even touch me." Jacelyn stared her right in the eyes. "In that case, I challenge you to a sword duel." Krissie looked shocked at first, but then threw her head back and laughed. "Make sure you have your coffin picked out first."
I handed my sword to Jaclyn and gave her an uncertain glance. She took it and faced Krissie. Without any warning Krissie charged. She pointed her sword tip directly at Jaclyn's throat. But Jacelyn was amazingly quick. She sidestepped and slashed krissie's shoulder. Barely dodging it, Krissie jumped up and swiped at Jacelyn's legs. I watched as she kicked the sword aside and used the hilt of the sword to whack Krissie in her head, which caused her to fall and scream in pain. Jacelyn pointed her sword at krissie's throat. She had won. By now, a group of campers have gathered around us, and they were all clapping and cheering her name. When she walked away from Krissie there were highfives and fistbumps given to her everywhere. She came back to me and handed back my sword. I looked at her in amazement. "Where did you learn to fight like that? She was the best fighter in camp! And you stood up to her!" Jacelyn shrugged and grinned. "No big deal, just doing what everyone should have done a long time ago." I actually smiled this time. Then I did something that surprised even myself. I stuck out my hand. "Friends?" I asked her. She looks surprised at first, then she smiled and shook my hand. "Friends."
