Replacement: Chapter One
My hair was damp and up in a bun, and I was rushing out to Hayes' pickup. He was sitting there with drooping eyelids.
I practically face-planted into the side of the truck and started slamming my fist against the window.
"Hey loser, unlock the car!" I started shouting at him. My blonde hair was so tangled, and stray strands were caressing my face.
I could feel myself growing impacient as he continued to ignore me, so my fist continued to find its way to the glass. Eventually he glanced over at me, and a sly grin was lurking across his golden tanned face.
"Hayes, I'm gonna beat your ass into 2015 if you don't open the damn door and take me to school!"
I wasn't joking at the time. I'd been late to school the entire week due to Hayes getting up late and being hungover. Being the football team quarterback and eventually winning all of your games, he was entitled to a party or two.
"Calm your tits, you bum. I'm opening the door." I watched him closely as the grin fell from his face and he leaned over, pushing the door open.
I struggled as I climbed into the car, shorts riding up my legs. As I sat down, I pulled them down, scared of perverts walking by, taking a quick peek at me.
"How're you, babe?" He said to me, and immediately after, laughter erupted from his throat. I rolled my eyes irritatedly in response.
"I'm fine, babe." I slurred at him sarcastically. Hayes and me have been best friends for a while, so I let him call me whatever he wants.
Sometimes I even let him say babe, but I get nervous 'cause he's been dating this girl Kami off and on for two years. I'd say she's kinda a slut but, hey, they're his decisions.
I am being serious when I say slut. She has slept with every guy on the football team, as far as everyone in school knows, and even when Kami, Hayes, me and a couple of friends go out to eat, she'll flirt with the other guys and sometimes peck their lips. I'm completely confused about why Hayes stays with her, but whatever tickles your pickle, right?
I prop my feet onto the dashboard and pull my iphone out, and scroll through instagram. I see a photo of Hayes and Kami and start laughing, since it's from a year ago and Hayes still has braces in the picture.
"What's so funny? Lemme see." He starts driving with one hand and peers over my shoulder. Once he sees the picture he starts whining, claiming that he was so hideous with braces. And he's right, but I guess it's fair to say that they did his teeth well.
As we pull up to the school, Hayes backs his car into the space because he's too lazy to back out after school. I check my makeup in the mirror just above my head, before the engine stops and I jump outta the car.
"Hayes, the bell is about to ring!" I shout, and then he goes running by.
"Not my fault if you're late!" He shouts back, dashing toward the door. I start in behind him, sighing. I've gotta get my own car.
I have a few B's, but mostly A's. I recently dropped the advanced curriculum shit because all of my homework was piling up, plus volleyball on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Also, they were threatening my spot in the advanced curriculum group because of all my tardies.
I did like school, honestly, but I tried harder than I would if it was just up to me because of my dad. Last year, my mom left Dad and I for another man. My dad didn't take it too well, and he was totally moping around until I started school this year.
He always talks about how "school is important" and "you can't mess around your senior year". I guess he's right, and I just wanna make him even a bit happier.
With great strides, my sandals hit the floor inside the school just as the bell rang. I let go a heavy sigh, before standing at the side of Hayes. I just about smacked him, but my English teacher was walking past and he always seemed to have a shitty attitude. PMS much?
Without saying anything, Hayes hugged me from the side and sauntered off with all of his team mates. Right behind him, Kami flashed me a fake smile. It was so obvious she disliked me, most likely because Hayes and I talked about more feelings than she and him did, and we were just best friends.
For senior year, we had a wide addition of students. I have no clue why so many new people were showing up, but I wasn't particularly thrilled about it. It was the second week of school, so I assumed that all of the students had arrived by now.
Unfortunately, the result of the new student arrivals meant that some people got a full-sized locker, and some of us got half-sized lockers.
So here I was with my ass in the air, bending down. I didn't understand why I had to have a locker on the bottom since no one was occupying the one above me, so I had made several attempts to open it the first week.l
But then, as I was placing my raggedy backpack into my small locker, I smelled cologne. Maybe I'd soaked some off of Hayes from our minimal amount of contact?
That assumption changed as soon as I looked up. A guy with perfect, sun-kissed skin, blonde curls and green eyes was looking down on me. I stood up straight, immediately embarrassed by my butt being right out in the open.
He had to be at least 6 foot!
Me being 5'5, that's a tall guy. But I couldn't contain my gasp, he was just so damn fine.
"Who the hell are you?" I heard Hayes say behind me.
**Authors note: Ignore that in this chapter, Hayes' name is Hayes. In the next chapter and following, his name will be Harrison. Let me know how you liked the first chapter!
