The room in which she began setting her studies was dark with just the desk lamp on. The light reflected off her reading glasses that were set on her narrow nose. There was a certain sleekness to her face; the way she presented herself was professional and determined. In spite of her dark circles that showed her lack of sleep, she was beautiful; even lips, high cheekbones, almond-shaped eyes, dark eyelashes. Her hair fell just above her shoulders, still wet from the shower she just took minutes ago.
She could've been a model really. But like a dog on a leash, she followed her husband into his career, biochemistry and genetics. They were the power couple in the science industry and very well-respected. People were willing to sell their limbs just to go to their conventions and conferences.
"Is this thing on?", she furrowed her eyebrows as she hits the video camera,"Ok yeah. This is log 1 by Dr. Amelia Evans. The date is January 12,1998. The weather is low 60s and the highest will be 72 degrees." She laughs under her breath," I'm just kidding. Well, let's get to the point.", It was hard for Amelia to hide her nervousness as her long slender fingers fidgeted with the papers in front of her. She recognized what she was doing and placed her hands on her lap, regaining her posture and looking into the camera.
"As of today, dr. Andrew Evans and I will begin conducting a series of experiments to test artificial enhancements of the human genes and brain function. Although this seems unnecessary to study, the human body is a complex system that should be pushed to its limits. Our species only uses 10% of our brain capacity, so what happens when we alter our genes and chemical levels that flows in the brain to reach 15%? 25%? There's a lot of questions that should be answered in the best possible way."She looked at her papers and skimmed them silently then regained herself, clearing her throat.
This was a sensitive subject for Amelia since she's spent almost a year preparing for this test. It's Her biggest project yet and it doesn't even have a 60% chance of succeeding but no one ever told her no. Amelia got what she wanted and had it by the end of the day. There was a time Mr. And Mrs. Evans wanted to quit many of their projects, abandon them to search easier ones. Simple things like curing cancer or limb regeneration; those simple things. But Mr. Evans had a passion for genetics and being able to perfect the human traits and characteristics. To alter the genes that gives you blue or grey eyes, that gives you brown or blonde hair, the gene that gives you the "perfect" skin complexion. It was an insatiable pull to know more; To push the human body to evolve significantly."We were told by the government to do our studies in a confidential area along with trustworthy scientists of our choosing. It will be limited resources for now but I trust our project will become something that the government can no longer hide. If we were able to tap into a small amount of the other 90%, imagine where that takes us as a species, as a society. What if we were able to teach ourselves in a matter of hours to fluently speak mandarin or Spanish? Imagine the possibilities. Due to our limited list of viable subjects, which is no one, my husband and I have decided to use our best and only subject, Lilli—" She adjusted herself in her large leather chair that stuck to the bottom of her thighs. She wore a black dress shirt with long sleeves, but had her pink panther pajama shorts on. In the background, a baby crying could be heard, catching Amelia's attention, cutting off her previous statement.
" Well, uh, that's all I really have to say today. Seems like Lilli won't be sleeping tonight." She reached towards the camera and ended the video.
