The sleepover party dragged on forever, or at least, that's how it felt. I couldn't even taste my birthday cake! I was too distracted. After not seeing Mark until last night, I couldn't think straight. I wondered how long this would take. Kalei walked up to me then.
"Hey, are you okay? You seem, well, a bit distracted." I nodded.
"Yeah, I'm fine, just finey fine fine!" She raised an eyebrow.
"Alright..." Kalei walked away from me. I sighed. I didn't want to lie, but what could I say? I went to my sleeping bag and fell asleep instantly.I woke the next day. My girl friends all were sleeping still, and it was only three in the morning. I groaned softly. I crawled away and opened the door. I ran quickly outside so my neighbors and anyone driving by wouldn't see me in my pjs. I hugged my chest tightly as I headed for the forest. The woods went deeper than I had ever thought. I lived on the edge of an entire world, I realized. Being forbidden to go there now has been explained. I closed my eyes in front of Marks and my meeting tree. I melted into a wolf again, blinking my green animal eyes to adjust. Cars have never looked so slow with my newly found speed. I took a step into the territory when I heard a noise. I froze and sniffed the air. The scent was unfamiliar to OutcastPacks, which was more like nuts, moss, and trees. Mark was fresh, like water. This smelled... Like a different water. Swamp like. It also smelled like fish, frogs, lizards, and reeds. My wolf body was practically screaming, "RUN!" But my human brain said to stay. I was taken over by this curiousity. I decided to stay put. Something blue glowed in the leaves and ferns. Mark? I thought. But I caught a flash of silver, not yellow like his pelt. I took a step back, and the wolf took one forward. It's snout was wrinkled, it's lips curled back. I wanted to run, but my feet were frozen to the ground. Then, the area was glowing with wolf eyes. They leapt out at me, paws outstretched. I howled in alarm. I began to run back, but I tripped. My paw got stuck in some pretty thick mud! The wolves surrounded me in a wide circle while I struggled against the wet earth. I understood why my paw was stuck, even without recent rain and it being the middle of summer. It explained the smell, too. This must be at least relevantly close to swamp land. The wolves, who I guessed lived by there, even seemed to carry the fog swamps held. I squeaked,
"Who are you?" The silver wolf stepped forward. It tapped it's nose to the ground, and the mud loosened. Must be some swamp power.
"I am SilverHeart, leader of the SilverPack. We'd like to welcome you to the swamp. Are you a wolf, or...?" I gulped.
"I-I'm a werewolf." The wolves around me snarled slightly, pulling back their ears flat to their heads. I noticed the colors of their pelts. They were different colors, but tinted with silver. I can't say much though, it made sense. I wondered that, if, say, SilverHeart let me in her pack, that my coppery fur would be a bit silver, too. I dismissed the thought. She wouldn't let me in. I am who I am. "Oh, I see," SilverHeart said in a whisper. "Well, then, welcome to the area. Do you have a pack yet? Have you, even more importantly, taken the oath?" Her ten other pack mates looked like they were going to spring at me if I did much more than looked wrong at their leader. A big, black, silver tinted male looked especially protective. He must be her mate, I realized.
"I, I'm, I guess, in OutcastPack...? And no, but I was on my way to take the oath." I swear, it was like SilverHeart was TRYING to make me say stuff to anger her wolves. They were creeping closer, the fog around them thickening. But she barked, and they reluctantly retreated. I kicked the ground slightly.
"Are we done here? I've got to get to my pack." SilverHearts expression changed, it was as though she rarely makes it. It was surprise.
"You are an interesting one. You're near SilverPack territory, so I bring my pack mates with me to... Greet newcomers. You seem to think you're all high and mighty, standing up to me and all. Well, stand up to this, defiant one!" All of SilverPack followed SilverHeart's pounce. I jumped high, watching almost in slow motion the entire pack smash into each other. I swung my back legs forward over the leader. Big mistake. SilverHeart's mate ran under me and snarled. He snapped his teeth at my foot. I howled in pain, and another wolf lunged at me. He nipped my ear harshly. A she-wolf launched herself at me and scratched my back. Tears sprung to my eyes.
"Agh!" I growled lowly. I couldn't take much more. But I thought about my waiting friends, and my parents. I thought about what would happen if I 'disappeared'. I thought about Mark. I couldn't let him go, he would lose it without me being there for him! I twisted and whacked SilverHeart's mate in the face. He wasn't very happy about it, I'll say that much! I jumped and clung to a tree. The she-wolf leapt, but fell on her back when she found I'd moved back to the ground. She whimpered at that. The other male ran in fear, which SilverHeart did not appreciate. The rest of the pack stood, stunned, then trotted past me into the swamp lands.
"This isn't over!" SilverHeart growled. "I will hunt you down and make sure the forest never has to see your ugly snout again! Until then, defiant one." She shoved her way into the trees, and was gone. Sheesh.
