The kelpie is an ancient Celtic water spirit. It haunts the freshwater streams and rivers of Scotland and Ireland. The kelpie often appears as a lost pony, a fine horse, or a young man or woman. It lures it's victims, who were mainly children young men and women, and travelers, towards the river. In horse form, the kelpie will encourage the victim to ride on its back. The horse will pleasure the rider at first, running like the wind. But, when the rider goes to get off, the kelpie's skin which is slick and cold as death, becomes sticky and the victim cannot escape. The kelpie will then run wild and plunges into the river or stream, dragging the victim with it. The kelpie watches the victim struggle for breath and enjoys their suffering. Then the kelpie feasts on everything but the liver and heart, which it lets float to the top. This is the Legend of the kelpie.
