War. What could she possibly mean war? We had lived in peace for hundreds of years. There were only two kingdoms on the continent: the fae kingdom and the ghost kingdom. A thousand years ago, there was a war that the fae were winning. Mira father made a treaty with the demon Zarron, that he would not destroy them because he said it wasn't right. Mira didn't see any reason why the ghosts would want to go to war with them when they were almost destroyed the last time. Nox just stared at their mother, dumbfound. Their father said nothing. He just stared at the wall like he wasn't even there. Her mother waited patiently for their reply, but neither of them could say anything.
"We'll tell the maids to deliver your supper to your chambers and you can process this news in private," their mother finally said. Nox was quick to leave the table and probably go straight to bed. Mira fiddled with her fingernails, debating with herself wether or not she should go to her chambers or say and ask her mother for more information." I've had the maids deliver a briefing folder about the whole situation to your room. You may find all the information you require their." Her mother said, almost reading her thoughts. Her mother could do things like that. For some unknown reason, she could always think what Nox and Mire were thinking.
She decided that she would retire to her rooms for the night. She stood up, tucked her chair in and walked through the corridors until she reached her room, which was just across from Nox. She could tell that he was studying because of the dull glow of a lantern illuminating the outlines of the door. Her chambers where simple. She had a lounge as well as eating area, small kitchen, bathing room and of course a large bedroom with an oversized wardrobe. She found the folder on her desk that rested under her window. Instead of grabbing it, she took one of her history books and started reading through the times when the demon war raged. Nothing stood out. It was just the same story over and over. She couldn't bring herself to read the folder, so she changed into her nightgown and hoped into bed.
"Mira, are you awake?" She heard from her doorway. She shot up out of bed and pulled out my dagger from her pillow and faced the door. Nox stood at the end of her bed and stared in shock as Mira's dagger pressed his throat. As she regained her composure, Mira lowered the dagger." Wow. I didn't realize you slept armed. Remind me not to get on your bad side." He remarked
"Well, you already are on my bad side. You just got me up!" Mira yelled at him. All she wanted to do was good nights sleep, but of course, he wouldn't want anything good for her. Oh no, of course not. Mira hoped out of bed, placing her dagger on her bedside table. She gave Nox a cruel stare before asking what her wanted.
"I've been reading the file and I think it would be best if we start training in the morning." He said, his voice laced with dread." The file says that Zarrons is the one who has declared war. He aims to take the kingdom in 4months. I guess he thought it would be nice to give us the heads up." Mira looked at him distantly, trying to process the information. So it was Zarron.
"So let me guess. You think that we could start training so that we will be able to defend the kingdom? Nox, it's not our responsibility. This is why we have soldiers." Mira said to him. The thought of going to war was terrifying for her. They had both lost their older brother, Rowan, 7 years ago, when they were only 10. He was hunting and killing rogue demons that had tried to penetrate their kingdoms wall. He was stabbed through the heart, and no amount of immortal healing would have saved him."We lost Rowan to the demons, Nox. I could handle loosing you. You're all I have." She said as a tear slid down her pale face. Nox was quick to move to her side comforting her."I can't loose you or mother or father and certainly not the kingdom."
"That's why we must train." She head her shoulders tightly,"We will do this to ensure our kingdom is safe. Meet me at the training rooms just after dawn. I promise you, Mira, I won't let anything happen to you." He pulled her into his embrace, reassuring her that everything would be alright, but somehow, Mira had the feeling that things would be quite the opposite.
