Chapter Three: Spencer
Spencer slowly opened his eyes.
He awoke in a hospital room. His body was wrapped around in bandages and stitches.
He let out a groan of pain and quickly grabbed his lower back. He slowly sat up. He looked around the room, and saw the bouquet of flowers sitting on the nightstand.
He noticed that there was a card attached, so he started reading.
"Hey there Spence. Hope you wake up soon, man. We miss you and Mark. Please don't die on us. Love, Shawn, Dave, and Napoleon." stated the card.
Spencer let out a sob, and started tearing up.
He threw the card out of anger, and punched his pillow. It wasn't fair, he thought.
Suddenly the hospital's door creaked open, and in came Dave, Shawn, and Napoleon. They were wearing casts and lots of bandages.
"Hey man! Glad to see you're awake!" said Dave excitedly.
"Yeah man, we thought you were done for. You were in a coma for three weeks.", said Napoleon.
Shawn remained silent.
"What happened to Mark?"asked Spencer with a lump in his throat.
The room had fallen silent. Nobody said a word. "He's dead, Spence."said the usually quiet Shawn.
"Dammit! Why? Why him? Why not me?"asked a crying Spencer.
"Hey man, don't blame yourself. There's nothing you could've done." , reassured Napoleon.
"Exactly! That's the problem! I couldn't do anything!" yelled Spencer, a river flowing from his eyes.
The rest of the boys remained silent.
"Does he have a grave?"asked Spencer straight-forwardly.
"Yeah, at Ready's Cemetary.",replied Dave.
"Let's go. I have to say goodbye to a good friend." said Spencer.
"But you're in no condition to go." said a soft voice from behind Napoleon, Shawn and Dave.
It was the hazel-haired girl from the arcade, but now she was wearing a nurse's uniform.
"You... You're a nurse here?", asked Spencer in disbelief.
"More like a junior nurse," she said. She smiled and revealed a glistening row of white teeth.
"My mom is the main doctor here, but she insists I help around,"she stated,"And that's why I can't let you go. You took quite the ass-whooping."
"Listen, beautiful," Spencer started to say, "I have to go right away. One of my best friends is dead, and I have to see his grave."
The girl nodded in understandment. She smiled and said, "You had me at 'beautiful."
The girl rushed to Spencer's side and helped him up. Spencer groaned and caught a glance at the girl's name tag.
"Thanks, Lila,"said Spencer. The rest of the boys rushed in to help Spencer too. Lila smiled and waved goodbye as the boys left the hospital room. In a flash, Lila ran up to Spencer and asked, "Before you leave, mind going to dinner sometime?" Spencer smiled, "Sure thing."
The gang got into Napoleon's van and drove to Spencer's house so he could get a wardrobe change and some money. Spencer also told Napoleon to stop at a store on the way.
Spencer was now dressed formally, and had a bouquet of flowers in his hand. He and the others made their way to Ready's Cemetary.
It began to rain by the time the group got there. Spencer stared ahead at Mark's grave. it read, "Here lies Mark. A good kid, a good son, but most important, a best friend."
Spencer and the others started tearing up. Spencer kneeled down and laid out the bouquet on top of the grave. "Mark, I'm sorry I couldn't so anything to prevent this. You were always like a brother to me. I'm really gonna miss you, smartass. Goodbye," said Spencer.
"C'mon Spence, let's get you home," said Napoleon.
Spencer, Shawn, and Dave got into Napoleon's van and drove off.!
When he was home, Spencer was welcomed by his dad, mom, and brother. They were so happy he was alright. They waited at the hospital forever, but came back to run errands.
Spencer was glad to see his family, but he went and locked himself up in his room.
That night, Spencer was in his room listening to music while doodling. He couldn't get over the fact that one of his best friends was now gone.
He felt a strong hatred towards the Downside Dragons, the psychotic bastards that killed Mark.
All Spencer wanted was payback for what they did. He then came up with a stupid, but critical plan.
He left his room, and came back with a long trench coat, fedora, gloves, and a small duffel bag with baseball bats and hockey sticks.
He put on the trench coat and fedora. Spencer looked like Rorschach from Watchmen. He looked at himself in the mirror, and noticed the similarities. He chuckled and said, "Now all I gotta do is wear a white mask and talk in a rugged and deep voice."
He strapped the duffel bag around his torso, locked his room's door, and went outside the window.
Spencer was standing out on the roof now. He stared at the sky and said, "Alright, I guess it's time to get some revenge."
It was still raining, and the night was cloudy and dark. The stars and moon were hiding behind an ominous row of clouds.
It was the perfect weather to seek revenge.
