Chapter Five: A Change of Heart
BEEP!BEEP!BEEP! The alarm rang in Spencer's room.
It was a Saturday morning. The rain had stopped and the sun had come out to play.
Spencer opened his eyes. He was greeted by the warm sunlight shining through his window. He was still lying in bed, listening to the alarm ring. He laughed and asked himself, "Why do I have an alarm for the weekend?" He slowly got yo from his bed.
He pressed hard on the alarm's snooze button, and headed to his bathroom. He looked in the mirror.
His sandy brown hair was a tangled mess and covered his brown eyes. He looked at himself and groaned. "Damn, I look like something that crawled out of the sewers."
"Spencer! Come down and eat some breakfast!" yelled Spencer's mother.
Spencer brushed his teeth, washed his face, combed his hair, and headed downstairs.
He was greeted by the smell of golden pancakes, eggs, and sizzling bacon when he entered the kitchen. He saw his mom cooking something and his brother seated at the table, stuffing his face. The TV was on, and an anchorman was stating the most recent news.
Spencer gave a good morning kiss to his mom and sat down at the table next to his brother, Michael.
"How do you feel, sweetie?" asked Spencer's mom. She went over and poured him a glass of orange juice.
"I'm fine mom, I couldn't sleep that well, though," answered Spencer, taking a sip of his orange juice.
"My poor baby!" she exclaimed. She then gave Spencer a big kiss on the cheek. Michael started chuckling at this and gave Spencer a big grin.
"Eww, gross! Mom, I'm sixteen!" said Spencer hysterically. Spencer's mom served him a plate topped with pancakes, eggs, and bacon. "I don't care if you're sixteen! You're my baby!", she said again.
Spencer was about to reply, but was cut off by the anchorman. "This just in, a member of the gang Downside Dragons was found dead at an alleyway next to 8-Bit Arcade. Nobody knows who or what could have done this, but police are investigating. Now we can only pray the Downside Dragons don't go around killing innocents trying to find this mystery-killer. I'm Will Burgundy, stay classy Lylat."
Spencer took a bite out of his pancakes.
"Oh man, that poor bastard," said Michael.
"Poor bastard? He's a part of the group that killed Mark and put me in a coma!", explained Spencer.
"Watch your language Spence. I guess you're right, but nobody ever really deserves to die. That guy probably had a family and friends. They're probably just as sad as you were," replied Michael.
Their mom was silent, and she went off into her room. Spencer took what his brother said to heart. He realized that him killing the Dragon was just the same as the Dragons killing Mark.
"Dammit, why do you always have to be right?", asked Spencer.
"It's a gift and a curse little brother," said Michael grinning. He then got up from the table and took his plate and glass to the sink. "I'm going to work today, so don't go and do something stupid and reckless."
Spencer smiled and said, "Oh c'mon, stupid and reckless are my best qualities." Michael laughed and headed to his room after giving Spencer a noogie.
Moments later, their mom came out of her room and kissed Spencer on the forehead. "I'm gonna go visit your Aunt Sandy,"she said. "Don't do something stupid, okay?"
"What is it with you people saying I might do something stupid?", Spencer said jokingly. He then asked, "Can I bring the guys over?"
"Sure thing, sweetie. I won't be back in a while, so take care," she answered. She left and moments later so did Michael.
"See ya later, buttface," said Michael. "Goodbye, jerk," replied Spencer.
Spencer finished his breakfast and washed the dishes. He recalled what his brother said and thought about the deceased Dragon.
"Maybe I shouldn't kill every Dragon," he thought,"Maybe I should just try to make them stop all of the wrong things they do. I should try to disband them or something, and I'll try my best not to kill all of them."
He then called over Shawn, Dave, and Napoleon. They arrived at the door after a while and Spencer invited them in.
"Did you really have to call so early in the morning? I was asleep,"said Dave.
Napoleon asked," So, why did you want us to come over?"
Shawn remained silent.
"Did you see the news about the Dragon that was killed last night?", asked Spencer.
"Yeah, I saw, what about it?", asked Napoleon.
Spencer took a deep breath and said," I killed him."
The other guys remained silent, but then they exploded in laughter. Shawn stopped once he realized Spencer was being honest.
"Holy crap! You did, didn't you?" exclaimed Shawn.
Dave and Napoleon stopped laughing. They believed Spencer now.
"Why would you do that?", asked Napoleon.
"Are you a freaking moron?", asked Dave.
"I did it because they killed our friend. They killed Mark, you guys!", explained Spencer.
"But you killing that guy makes you just as bad as them!", said Dave.
"I know, which is why I don't wanna kill the Dragons, I wanna stop them once and for all. I wanna put them in jail and stop their crime syndicate throughout the city!" yelled Spencer.
"But they're ruthless! And they control nearly the whole city! How are you gonna take down the whole organization?", asked Napoleon.
"That's the thing,"started Spencer, "I'm gonna need help. So will you guys like to be crime-fighting vigilantes alongside me?"
