Jasmine hesitated outside the door, and that made her heart split and tear even more. How could they let things get to this point where she had second thoughts of even knocking on a door? How could she let it get there?

Four years earlier

Jasmine watched the girl on top of the main platform in awe. She had a beautiful voice, and it she had no trouble at all most of the notes.

"Jazzy, you should go up there," Jasmine's best friend, Mina, encouraged. Jasmine bit her lip in shyness and shook her head.

"Are you kidding? That girl is amazing and im just... not. Ill embarrass myself." Jasmine deadpans.

"You have an amazing voice too Jazzy. Go up there. Please? I didnt bring you out here for nothing." Mina goads her and Jasmine looks back at the stage, still in awe at the girl. She was mostly in awe of her persona. She was dancing around on the karaoke stage, smiling and having a good time. She looked like she had no care in teh world, and even the others in the place were singing along with her too. She was that charismatic.

Jasmine wished that she was that daring to sing in front of dozens of people. Her best friend had taken her out today at karaoke night in hopes to lift her spirits about a test she had failed. Her mother had yet to find out, but she would soon and the consequences made Jasmine incredibly closed off and upset. She didnt want to hear another lecture about not surpassing her mothers expectations, and becoming a deadbeat like her father who left them.

She didnt want to hear about that at all.

Finally, the dark skinned Asian girl on stage had finished her song and everyone clapped for her. Jasmine applauded and the girl simply smiled at everyone and thanked them in the mic. Before she could even get off the stage the main host of the evening jumped on the small stage with his own mic and threw his arm around her.

"Wow, what a voice you have." He said, grinning.

She smiled. "Thanks."

The guy looked at the crowd. "Ya'll think she was good?"

There many shouts of "Hell yeah!" And "Yes!" and just plain whooping and whistles. The host grinned even bigger. "Then i say we listen to her sing again....but in a competition!"

Everyone started hollering now, edging the idea on. Even Mina called out "Do it!" And Jasmine shook her head in laughter.

The host turns his head to the girl on stage. "How do you feel about that? Ready for some versus?"

She laughed into her mic and said, "I'm down."

The place cheered in excitement, whistling and shouting. The host smiled back at the crowd, removing his arm from around the girls shoulders. "Alright, who is the lucky brave one to go against this lovely lady?"

Everyone in the place started looking around, trying to see if anyone was going to volunteer. There was a moment where Jasmine thought that no one was going to step up, not that she blamed them because the dark skinned Asian sang beautifully, but then another girl around the same age raised her hand and stepped on the stairs leading to the stage on the right side. "Ill do it."

People clapped for her, cheering and saying things in excitement. She looked like a cute school girl, who was short but cute. She smiled at the host who gave her an extra mic.

"So you'll be the lucky girl who will go against the champ?"

"She wants to do it too!" Mia suddenly yelled, getting everyone's attention. Jasmine's stomach turns cold and she whirls on her friend.
