Once we had recovered ourselves, Simmons took out her very detailed map to try and find where our tunnel led. The map showed the city, I think. Really, it just looked like lines drawn all over the place to me, but Simmons seemed to know what to look for. She studied the map for a few minutes before she pointed to the map and spoke.
"This is where we are. If we continue to crawl through the vent, we'll reach a T intersection. We need to turn right and that will lead us out the back of the building into a maze of ally ways. I think it would be best if we stayed in the shadows until we can get back to the airport. Until then, I'll try to find an alternate route so we hopefully don't run into any more zombies. I think I'm a bit zombied out." Simmons said as she hung her head. I put my hand on her shoulder and gave her a smile.
"We are going to get out of here Simmons. I promise you. And I don't ever break my promises. Now lead the way. I would like to get out of this hellhole as soon as possible." Then we were off. Crawling on all fours, Simmons lead the way. The walls were so close we could barely move. Once we reach the intersection, Simmons turned right. I followed her for what seemed forever. Finally we came to another vent which lead outside. The thought of fresh air was the best thought I'd had all day. When we reached the vent, Simmons turned so that she could kick the vent down. After a few good kick, the thing came off and sunlight flooded in. Very quickly and quietly, Simmons slipped out of the tunnel and landed on the ground. It was about a two metre drop. I threw down my bow to Simmons so I could use both my hands to push myself out. Once I wriggled myself out, I dropped to the ground with a large 'thud' which jarred my whole body. I was stiff from shuffling in one position. My calves were also sore from running and my shoulders from using my bow. Simmons looked pretty sore too. She walked with a small limp as we walked through the back ally's.
Simmons perfectly neat blonde hair was now in shambles. It stuck out in different directions and was oily. I'm sure mine looked the same, but I didn't have a mirror on me to check. We snuck through the dark labyrinth of ally ways. We walked for about and hour, when one of the ally's lead to a dead end.
"Well, this isn't on the map. It says that we should be able to walk right through here, take a left, then we'd have a straight shot to the airport." Simmons said with disgust.
"Maybe we just took a wrong turn back there. It'd be easy to get lost in here. Just check again to see if we have gone the wrong way." I suggested to Simmons, but she just shook her head.
"No, this map shows that there are no dead ends. But I'm sure I can figure out a different route. Come on, let's get moving." She said and turned the other way, but stopped abruptly. Standing in our way was a single zombie. He didn't look as worn out as the others. His skin was still grey, but he wasn't rotting just yet. He was wearing a red hoodie with denim jeans. I positioned myself in front of Simmons, who was breathing heavily, and strung my bow. I aimed for the middle of his forehead. But something stopped me. Before I could fire my arrow, a few husky words slipped from his mouth.
"Help you get out."
Ok, now I was really freaked out.
