Chapter Fifty-One
I try again to untie the ropes, getting his wrists free first. I leave him to untie his ankles while I move behind him and untie the ropes keeping his waist tied to the chair.
"You stink." He complains, leaning over the untying the ropes.
"Let's go." I say, ignoring his statement. He stands up, wobbly on his legs, before coming to a halt. I put his arm around my shoulder to steady him but he stops my movement and pulls me into a tight hug.
"I can't believe you're here. You shouldn't have come here." His breath tickles on my neck, making me shiver in response. I feel him smirk on my neck and push him away, smiling.
"Let's go Romeo." I chuckle, letting him put his weight on me and walking towards the door.
"Sure thing Alicia." Oh, I forgot about that.
"Actually, my name's Alex." He smiles.
"Oh yeah Zane called you Alex a while back, I wanted to ask you about that. Alicia didn't suit you anyway."
As we get closer I start to get a terrible feeling in the pit of my stomach. The guard that was sleeping peacefully on the chair is now gone, completely gone.
I keep moving, practically dragging the hundred-tonne man with me. As we reach the door Adam starts to become steadier on his feet and so puts less weight on me as we step out into the hallway.
I look up and down the hallway, searching for Zane, but come up with nothing.
"Did you come alone?" Adam asks. I can already hear the chastising tone in his voice and he doesn't even know Mia here's yet.
He turns on me so fast I stumble from the lack of weight on my shoulder.
"MIA'S HERE!" He growls lowly. I really need to think my words and not speak them. I raise my hands up in defence from his terrifying eyes that have turned dark.
"We told her to stay put and she jumped in the back of the truck." He growls in frustration running his hands through his hair.
"Where is she?" I can tell she's starting to panic now, scared for Mia's safety. I look up at him, putting my hand on his shoulder. He flinches slightly, blinded by rage but thankfully calms down.
"She's with a group of women in a building by the fence. We're going to go get her and Zane now and get out of here. With the other women." He looks up confused.
"You're going to save all of them?" I look up at him, both shocked and confused.
"You know about them?" The expression on his face changes to one I've never seen him wear – fear and sadness. I was under the misconception that Adam couldn't experience fear.
From the short time I've known him, he's always put on a brave face for Mia – either that or he's been pissed at something.
"What happened?" I ask, one again placing my hand on his check. Why I'm so touchy feely today I have no idea, I think I'm just glad to have him back.
"We just need to get out of here." He starts walking down the hallway, having completely shut me out. I walk beside him as we go to exit the building, sneaking quick glances up to his face which has now turned stone cold.
As we reach the door Adam pushes it open and walks through. I follow him only to come face to face with his back when he's stopped right in front of the door. And what a nice back it is.
I move around him to see something that will scar me for the rest of my life.
Zane bashing a man's skull in with a baseball bat.
He hits the man on the head again and I wince, grabbing onto the nearest thing I can – Adam's arm. He moves me behind him and turns me around to face back down the hallway we came from.
I can still hear the grunting from Zane wielding the baseball bat, but I close my eyes and try to block out the sound of him hitting the man's head.
It's quite clear that the man is dead by now but Zane doesn't stop. I feel a tear starting to fall down my check and don't stop them, letting all of them fall as Adam tries to stop my brother.
"Zane." It doesn't stop, the noises and the grunting. Adam tries a new trick, guilt.
"Zane you're scaring Alex." The noises stop and I can only hear the harsh breathing of Zane. I turn around, curiosity taking the better of me and I instantly regret my decision.
The man's face is no longer recognisable, blood covering up most of his deformed face. I look away, feeling the sick rising in my throat.
Zane advanced towards me, blood splattered on his clothes and face. I retreat however terrified of the man who used to be my sweet and caring brother.
Adam comes to stand beside me, placing his hand on the small of my back and pushing me down the path in the direction of where Mia is hiding.
Zane walks behind us while I huddle close to Adam, more for comfort than anything else.
"Oh no." Adam says, as he glances back towards Zane for the millionth time. I turn around, trying not to put my eyes on Zane and see men standing around the body of Sleepy.
"Oh no indeed." I reply, looking at Zane with disgust before turning and running towards the building where the women are held.
I hear the footsteps of Zane and Adam behind me while I sprint as fast as I can, wanting to get Mia and the other girls away from this place as fast as possible.
I burst into the building with Zane and Adam hot on my tail. Mia runs over from the corner of the room, embracing her brother in a tight hug.
"We need to go now." I say to Maria and she nods, the women all pull out backpacks from under their beds – already packed and ready to go.
Well that was easy.
Adam peers out of the doorway, having detached Mia from his leg and sent her to me. He waves for us to leave and moves out of the building, Zane quickly following suit.
I notice Zane and Adam taking down men outside the door and jump to join them. Maria pulls me back however having followed me out the door.
