Maka Albarn subjected to the illness commonly known as cancer.
Historically known as a death sentence, she followed the normal treatments at the hospital, still keeping up with her classes as a regular student at DWMA.
But soon her body could not hold up to the treatments, and the young girl had to put her uniform up. She lost her hair. Then her body slowly became bone and skin.
Soul Eater Evans suffered beside her.
♡
"You know Soul, I'm not really sad that I'm dying." Maka smiled at the death scythe and he looked up at her.
She laid on her hospital bed, smiling. Her emerald eyes shined as she shared a conversation with her partner.
"Maka, you haven't ate your lunch today. Are you okay?" Soul said as he reached over and pulled her tray off the side table.
Maka looked away, feeling the bile rise in her throat. The treatments made eating sound terrible to the girl.
"I'm fine Soul."
"Okay."
♡
Soul entered the hospital lobby after another tiring day of school. Walking over to the elevator, he punched the button to open the doors.
Breathing in, he sighed loudly. Soul then entered the elevator, standing by a middle aged woman and a small girl who seemed to be crying.
"Grandma...grandma is gone mama. I didn't get to say good bye." The girl sobbed as she held her mom's hand.
The death scythe looked away from the scene and fixed his hat. He then stepped out of the elevator on floor 5, walking down the hall to Maka's room.
Soul seated himself by the ever dying scythe meister, Maka.
"How was the treatment today Maka? I brought you those donuts you wanted too." The white haired young man sat the box down from the local shop.
"Oh Soul! Thank you. They look so delicious." Maka clapped her hands together and marked her page, setting the book a side she had in her lap.
"You know Maka, they're thinking of doing reassignment. I'll have a different meister." Soul breathed in, looking at the woman that put in so much work to create the last Death Scythe.
"That's great Soul, you'll have someone to create a bond with again. You don't need me you know." Maka reached over to the box of donuts and smiled, that nauseous feeling rising again her body. She then drew her hand back.
"But, I do Maka."
♡
"Ahem, excuse me Soul?" Said Spirit Albarn, who seemed depressed as ever to have his only child dying.
"Yes? What do you need old man?" Soul sighed as he was just about ready to leave school, with the crisp air hitting the back of his neck.
"Maka, she's been pretty tired from treatments lately. You've been seeing her right?" The father asked as he scratched his head awkwardly.
"Yes, I have. Every single day since she was admitted into the hospital. Is there a problem?" Soul held his jacket in his other hand.
The old weapon sighed and looked Soul in the eyes. "She has a limited amount of time. Maka gets tired, but she still stays awake to see you after school. Even if you're in love with her, she won't be here forever."
♡
Soul sprinted to the hospital, not caring who he bumped into. Only one person was on his mind.
Maka.
He then ran into the lobby, pushing past a few nurses and a receptionist. The death scythe had fearing rising in his chest, hoping to see her still alive.
"I'm sorry!" Soul pushed the button on the elevator a few times as he held a small arrangement of tulips. Tapping impatiently, the elevator rose taking Soul closer to Maka.
The metal doors opened, Soul pushing through all the people first to get to his partner. As she even still alive?
Pushing open the door to Maka's room, Soul rushed in to see more wires arranged on the girl's fading body, monitors beeping and get well cards.
"Maka...I'm here." Soul sat down beside her immediately and took her hand, seeing how fragile it was.
"Soul...it's you. How...was school?" Maka turned her head over slowly and grinned.
"Maka, you idiot. You shouldn't be asking those questions...you're on your deathbed." Soul held her hand tightly as he felt his eyes getting wet.
"Don't cry Soul. It doesn't hurt to die. It just hurts seeing others cry for you." Maka looked into his deep red eyes and felt her heart flutter.
"You look exhausted Soul. You should be out...in the world doing good things. With a meister that isn't dying." Maka laughed a little bit.
"No Maka! I need you! You're my only meister." Soul then started to cry, laying his forehead against Maka's. He was desperate.
"You don't deserve this Maka. Cancer...you're only 16! You've got a whole life ahead of you." The tears flowed rapidly.
"Nonsense Soul...you're the one that needs to live." Maka coughed a little bit and looked at the tulips, her eyes widening a little.
"My favorite...thanks Soul." The young girl smiled again and kissed his cheek with all the strength she could gather.
Laying back on the pillow, she turned her head to face him. Reaching out with her other hand, she caressed his cheek with her smooth hands.
"Our adventures...were some of the best memories I can remember." Maka then laid her hand back down.
"It's the same for me Maka. You were so...strong. Now look at you." Soul swallowed hard and looked at her emerald eyes. Sunlight shined in, showing the last few minutes of the setting sun.
"Fight for me Maka." He then rubbed her slightly cold hand, feeling the bones.
"Soul...I'm close to my time. I can see the light." Maka continued to look at the ceiling, her eyes getting glossy.
"No! Please...Maka!" Soul let out a sob as the girl he formed such a strong bond with was about to leave the world.
It was silent, the only sounds were Soul's desperate pleas and the soft sounds of the world outside. Maka was concentrating, feeling the life slowly draw out of her body. She then remembered the first time they defeated a kishin egg, one of the happiest moments of both their lives.
Then her lips seemed to move slowly, letting out her final wish.
"I just wish...I could handle you one more time. As a meister."
Then Maka's chest stopped moving. Her breathtaking eyes closed, her face resting peacefully on the pillow she rested on.
"I...loved you, Maka."
♡
"Soul...I really loved you too."
• the end •
"It's hard to forget someone that gave you so much to remember."
