Chapter 5

"I believe you must be mistaken," Derrik said. "I do not have a sister." The girl flashed a brief smile.

"You have much to learn, brother. There is so much you do not know. Come, let me show you something," The girl stood up and began walking out of the room, motioning for Derrik to follow. They walked along a lavish corridor, complete with golden walls and purple carpets. They continued walking until the girl came to a sudden halt. "Here we are," She said brightly.

The room they had just entered was bigger than any house Derrik had ever seen. Nearly two dozen people (most were elves,) stood scattered around the room, each using a different ability. One man swiftly transitioned from a crouching position to a mid-air jump, only to disappear, then re-appear on the other side of the room.

"What is this place?" Derrik asked. The girl embraced Derrik before responding.

"This is our legacy, dear brother! This is our army!" She replied. Derrik was stunned.

"Why would we need an army?" Derrik asked. The girl looked at him and grinned.

"So that we can re-claim our empire! Our father has ruled with evil and darkness for far too long. It is time that the true heirs take it back!" The girl finished her speech with flourish.

"So, you really are my sister?" Derrik asked.

"Yes, I am indeed. Oh! I'm so sorry! How rude of me! I haven't told you my name! It's Flora," The girl said.

"Nice to meet you, Flora," Derrik said, extending his hand. "So, show me what our little army can do," Derrik said with a grin.

..........................................................................

The hooded figure hissed in excitement. All was going according to plan, except for Flora. Derrik was never supposed to meet her. Either way, the creature was pleased. Soon, he would be able to take his true form and rule Ranora from the surface. But not yet. He knew that he must wait. The boy needed to be stronger, much stronger. But it would not take long now.

........................................................................................................

"Everyone in this army has different abilities," Flora explained. "Samuel, the man you saw earlier, can teleport, while his daughter can transform into whatever she wishes. Everyone in this room is related to us, which is why they can use energy to their advantage."

"Related to us? What does that have to do with being special?" Derrik asked. Flora giggled again, and then answered.

"Our parents were both mighty provisioners, meaning that they could harness the energy in any way they pleased. Our mother, Queen Sara of the elves, could control all of the elements and command them to bend at her will. Our father, the wretched low-life Neyom, could do exactly what mother could... and more. He could even harness the energy in such a spectacular way that he could even fly,

“But remember, a provisioner could only use their inner strength and outer energy. Our father wanted more. He wanted god-like powers, in order to become a more powerful ruler. He eventually got his wish, but it would only work if he gave up his abilities. The being that gave him his new-found power stripped him of his natural abilities, spreading the source of energy." Flora took a deep breath, and then continued.

"The energy had nowhere to go, except for those whose bodies could accept it. Naturally, the power flowed into anyone related to Neyom or Sara, since two become one after marriage." Flora looked at Derrik and grinned. "Sorry for the long explanation. It's just so complicated. Just two years ago, I was a serving girl down at the local inn, until someone told me all that i'm telling you now."

Derrik looked at her with awe. "So, how did we get the abilities?" He asked.

"We are direct descendants of the two most powerful provisioners of all time. Their power was passed onto us once we were born," Flora replied.

Derrik took a minute to let this sink in. "You mean to tell me that if Neyom were not my father, I could not do anything special?" He asked.

"Derrik, do not feel ashamed. You cannot change who your father is. You can only change your life. If you stay true to yourself and help those around you, then you are already better than him," Flora said lovingly. "Now, follow me. I believe that there is something else you will want to see."

....................................................................

Derrik followed Flora through more winding hallways and corridors, until Flora came to a stop. "Derrik, beyond this door is your future. I cannot stress enough that you must cherish what is beyond this door," Flora said darkly, almost as if she were another person.

"What do you mean?" Derrik asked. Without so much as a reply, Flora opened the door in order to reveal...

"Sharelle!" Derrik shouted with joy. He had nearly forgotten about her amidst all of the confusion.

"Derrik, I am glad you are safe!" Sharelle ran over to Derrik and wrapped her arms around him. "I thought you were dead," She said solemnly. Derrik noticed a tear running down her cheek.

He wiped away the lone tear and whispered in her ear. "I am glad that I am not dead. If I were, I would not be here now."

Derrik felt overwhelmed with emotion. The woman whom he had believed to be his responsibility was the only reason he felt peace now. On the other hand, he did not understand what Flora had said about Sharelle being the future, and how he must cherish her. He cared about Sharelle, but he was still unsure of who she truly was.

"Come on," Flora said. "We must train both of you before you are ready to leave the village. When you are finished with your training, nobody will think twice about crossing your paths."

Derrik followed Flora, keeping Sharelle by his side the whole way.
