Song for this Chapter: The Kooks - Naive

Charlotte’s POV

“How uhh.. How did you know my name?” I managed to say barely above a whisper.

He ran his long slender fingers through his dark hair before taking a seat on my couch. “I don’t.”

“But, you just said it…I heard you! You sai-“

“I did not say anything” he said carelessly, “Drop it.”

I let out a huff of disbelief as I walked over to the kitchen, I carefully glanced through each pantry until I came upon a bag of chips. What can I say, when I’m nervous I get hungry.

I retook my seat on the opposite side of the guy before awkwardly popping chip after chip into my mouth. His eyes stayed glued to something I could not see before he turned to me.

“How long do you plan to be here?”  I said nervously.

“I don’t know.” He said, his eyes never leaving me.

“Can you at least try to hold a conversation with me, you know, it’s the least you can do.” I folded my arms and rolled my eyes like a bratty child.

His lips parted to reveal a set of perfectly etched teeth. I watched as the sides of his eyes crinkled in amusement, he was now smiling. His laugh echoed throughout the room as he held a hand to his chest.   My eyes furrowed in confusion.

“What?” I blurted out. “What was funny?”

“You” My mouth opened to speak but I was cut off, “I’ve never seen someone try to ‘tell off’ their attacker, especially when there is a gun involved. Annnnnddd, you’re trying to get a conversation going, something isn’t right in your brain Char-“ He stopped himself at the last word. I raised my eyebrow in suggestion.

“Char- what?” I hinted.

He shot me a gaze and I dropped the subject before falling into another pit of awkward silence.

“You got any food?” He asked, his smile now long gone.

“Chips.”

“Get up.” He demanded as he rose to his feet, when I didn’t comply he tapped the fabric of his back pocket to remind me of his advantage.

I used my better judgment and stood up.

“Come on, I’m hungry. We are going to get something to eat and you will not say a word to anyone but me.” I gave him a “are you serious look” which was shot down by his burning gaze.

“Fine. Whatever.” I finally complied after a prolonged stare down.

“Good Girl,” he smirked which caused me to scoff in disgust.

-

“What’s the closest place to eat around here?” he asked after a couple minutes of walking in silence.

“McDonalds.” I said plain and simply.

“Oh right, I think I saw one on our way back.” He said coolly.

A couple minutes and awkward silences later we were at the door way of the five star restaurant. Ha, no.  We were at McDonalds.

“Remember what I said, not a word, I’ll order, what do you want?”

“Chicken nuggets.” I spit rudely.

My impolite tone was returned with a scoff before he grabbed my hand and entwined my fingers with his. The rough contact was surprising and my skin prickled at the contact. However, he seemed cool and collected.

We entered the fast food place hand in hand; I guess he wanted to give off the illusion of a “happy couple”.

We came to abrupt stop at the counter.  The cashier smiled at us warmly before asking what we wanted to have. My attacker, being the incredibly rude person he is, returned her warm smile with a scowl before demanding our orders. The cashier still held a smile on her face, but now it was visibly forced.   He laughed at her nervousness which caused me to fidget under his grip.

“Stop moving.” He whispered into my ear, I shivered and he noticed because I could feel him smile against my earlobe.

After receiving our order we made our way to the back of the booths to eat our food.

“Haden.” He said as I sat down. My eyebrows pulled together in confusion. He sighed loudly before he continued, “that’s my name.”

“I don’t really think I asked, nor do I care. I just want to go home,” I huffed.

“Fine.” He surprisingly replied.

“Without you there.” I added to make sure we were on the same page.

“Fine.” He said again as his lips twitched up into a smile. It couldn’t be that easy. There had to be a catch, he wasn’t going to let me off without a fight and I knew it.

“So that’s it then?” I asked.

“Yeah, that’s it. I won’t come home with you. I promise by it,” he said coolly as he popped his last fry into his mouth. “Come on now, get up.”

I slowly rose to my feet before he tugged on my arm, pulling me out of the door, almost causing me to fall over. I would have yelled at him if it wasn’t for the fact that he was finally taking me home.

I was surprised when he entwined our fingers together, but this time no one was around, he didn’t have to do this.

“Hey,” he said as he stopped walking, “don’t be afraid anymore, loosen up.” He gave me a seemingly genuine smile, and I could no longer fight the perverted thoughts that were playing in my mind. He was extremely good looking, I could admit that, but he was still a criminal and I won’t be truly safe until I get home.

He started light conversation with me as we were walking; causing my mind to shortly forget what kind of situation I was in.

I was only reminded when we stopped walking at an apartment. An apartment that wasn’t mine.

I looked at him for answers, but instead he smiled.

“But you said..” I exclaimed, before being rudely cut off.

“I said I wouldn’t come home with you, and I didn’t, so you’ll be here with me.” He pulled our hands apart. “I don’t particularly trust you not to tell yet, so this is your new home as of now.”

Before I could even get another word in I was pushed inside of the dark room.
