Chapter 1
-Caleb-
“Okay. One more question for the day.” Ms. Davis, our history teacher said. “When did Hawaii become a state?”
No one raised their hand. Finally, a girl near the back of the classroom raised her hand.
“Rachel?” Ms. Davis called, sounding hopeful. I turned around to look at her, the girl I’ve had a crush on since sixth grade. The girl who doesn’t seem to even know I exist except when she occasionally says hey to me.
“Um, was it August 21, 1949?”
“No, I’m sorry but it was in 1959. Good try, though.”
Rachel blushed. Dang, she looked so pretty. Some snickers were heard throughout the room. I just wanted to slap every single person who made a sound.
“Okay. Now I will announce everyone’s history project partners.” Ms. Davis said as she picked up a sheet of paper.
I partially zoned out as she said everyone else’s name.
Finally, she called on me. “Caleb, your history project partner will be…” she paused as she looked down at her paper, “Rachel.”
My heart skipped a beat. Rachel. Rachel! This was going to be the best history project ever!
“Remember to follow the guidelines on the hand-out! Have a great weekend!” Ms. Davis called out over the sound of the bell ringing and people gathering their books together.
I walked over to Rachel. “Hey.”
“Hey.” She shoved some papers in her binder and then closed it.
I was trying to act cool and confident, but I didn’t want to be cocky. Just act like yourself. Dang, I like this girl way too much. “Um, I’m busy after school today, are you available tomorrow. I know it’s a Saturday…” I left the sentence hanging.
“Sure, that works. I don’t really have anything else to do.”
“Great.” I smiled. “My house or yours?”
“I guess it really doesn’t matter.” She shrugged. “Yours?”
“Sounds great!”
“Allright, well, see ya.” She picked up her books and walked past me.

-Rachel-
I laid down in my bed after a quiet dinner to myself. My parents had gone out on a date. I began thinking about my history project tomorrow…with Caleb. He was a nice guy. It seemed like he cared about people.
I let my thoughts wander until they came to something I’d rather not think about.
//////Flashback//////
“Honey, we need to tell you something.” My mom’s face looked serious.
“Okay. What?”
She took a deep breath. “You were adopted.”
I was confused. “Adopted? What? Why?”
“We adopted you a few days after you were born.”
“So you’re not my real mother?”
She got up to give me a hug. “Honey, I am your mother, just not your birth mother.”
“What happened to my birth mother?”
“Nothing happened to her.”
“Then why did she give me up?” I was really confused now.
She sighed. “Calm down. I’ll tell you the whole story.” After taking a deep breath, she began, “Your mother was married, got pregnant, but decided that she wasn’t ready for a baby. She got an abortion, but you survived. After you were born, they were just going to abandon you and not give you the medical care that you needed, but we stepped in. Thankfully, nothing major was wrong with you and you don’t have many health issues today. You’re a living miracle.”
Tears streamed down my face. “Why didn’t she want me?” I sobbed.
I shook myself from the flashback
Tears streamed down my face. Why? Why didn’t my birth mother want me? What was wrong with me? I began sobbing and hugging my pillow. Why do I feel unloved?
