Harry looked around at all the faces at the dinner table. He wondered how he'd come from so little, just him and the Dursleys (the most ungracious company) to such a big family like this. More than two dozen faces, all smiling, all enjoying themselves. Molly had outdone herself again, bringing out a Christmas Pudding, yule log, trifle, mince pies and Harry's favourite, treacle tart. James gave him a knowing smile and Harry began to laugh. Seeing that he had humoured his father, James began to laugh too, to many strange looks from Ginny.
"What are you laughing at?"
"Nothing, Gin," Harry managed to catch his breath, "Just an inside joke is all."
"Sure," she replied, cutting a slice of Yule Log for Lily, who accepted it graciously and greedily tucked in.
"Lil, don't eat it too quickly. You'll get indigestion!" Harry scolded.
Lily looked up from the cake, with chocolate staining her lips. "That's future me's problem!"
Molly called across the table. "Harry, darling, there's treacle tart for you. Let me send it over."
A plate flew over and landed on Harry's placemat, followed closely by a slice of what Harry could only think of as heaven.
"Thanks Molly!" He called back.
James smiled and looked over to his Grandma. "Can I have a piece too, grandma?"
"You? Treacle Tart?" Molly looked over in confusion. "Are you sure? I didn't think you..."
"I just wanted to try it again," James glanced over to Harry, "Maybe it isn't as bad as I remember."
Harry smiled and felt a small prick in his eyes that he quickly dispersed with a few blinks. Another plate flew over, following by a piece of treacle tart, landing in front of James with a small thump. He grinned cheerfully at Molly and picked up his fork.
"You'll want to try it with custard," Harry whispered amidst the other conversations happening, handing him the boat.
"Thanks," James replied, pouring a large sum over the tart and placing it back down. He picked up his fork again and looked up at Harry, before lifting a bite to his mouth and eating it. There was a pause and he looked up again in delight. "It's so good!" He cried, between mouthfuls.
Harry laughed and Ginny gave him a nudge.
"Just like his dad," she grinned and took a piece of Harry's, popping it into her mouth. "Mmm... Mum does know how to cook."
"Hey, get your own!" He cried, nudging her and laughing. Ginny smiled then went back to her own dessert. Harry looked down at the slice and his lip curled. Carving a bite, he took a deep breath in, smelling its sweetness, making his mouth salivate a bit. The moment it touched his tongue, his taste buds cried out in delight.
The one thing that could bring them all together sure tasted divine.
