Chapter 4
Paix
Leaving the shop, I walked down the mountain and through the door of our house. Isaiah immediately greeted me at the door, and I hugged him tightly.
"Where's Mom?" I asked him quietly.
"Kitchen. Dinner's almost ready," he replied. I nodded and went into the kitchen.
"Need any help?" My mother turned around and hugged me.
"Actually, if you wouldn't mind setting the table, dinner will be ready in a few minutes." I nodded before getting plates, napkins, and silverware and setting the table.
"Isaiah, dinner!" I heard my mom call. Isaiah appeared in his seat as my mother and I brought the food to the table.
"How'd the interviews go?" I asked her calmly.
"I think I found a job at the courthouse." She'd been a lawyer for as long as I can remember. "How about you?"
"Applied at the music store."
"Any new boyfriend material, Mom?" Isaiah asked. She shook her head.
"Paix?" she joked.
"Nah."
"Why not?" Isaiah wondered aloud.
"Because," I began, "I, erm, play for the other team, if you will."
"What team?" My brother looked confused.
"Wildcats!" I yelled, not even thinking. All three of us laughed. I was quite pleased that I made them laugh so hard.
After dinner, I went upstairs to get ready for bed. I took my earbuds out from under my pillow and plugged them into my phone, putting the music on shuffle.
"I am not afraid to keep on living. I am not afraid to walk this world alone. Honey, if you stay, I'll be forgiven. Nothing you can say can stop me going home," I sang along. What are the odds that the first song that plays when you put your music on shuffle is your favorite?
Actually, it's highly probable if you love every song on your playlist and will gladly listen to any of them at any time.
However, "Famous Last Words" is probably my favorite song ever.
Somehow I managed to fall asleep while listening to My Chemical Romance, something I'd never done before and hoped to never do again.
"Can I sit here?" I asked upon entering the classroom. She nodded. "Amour, right?"
"Yeah, and you're Paix?" she asked. Before I could answer, the bell rang and Mr. Ward walked in.
"Hello class. Today we are going to talk about some literature," he said, looking at Amour. He quickly looks away, though.
"But it looks like we have a new student." He was looking at me. "What is your name so I can add you to the roll?" I was relieved that I didn't have to, like, present my inauguration speech or anything.
"Paix," I said quietly.
He looked a little confused but didn't say anything. He started to name some stuff off after telling us to get out a sheet of paper to take notes on and a pen.
Suddenly, I leaned over to Amour. "Do you have a pen I can borrow?" I asked quietly.
"Sure," she said, handing me a pen.
"Amour, are you listening? That's detention after school for talking in class," he stated. I could see him resisting a smirk as some of the boys started to go oooooh.
