Kristen doesn't even want to listen about homeschooling. She excuses herself from dinner and goes to her room, her mother yelling after her.
"Jules," John grasps his wife's wrist. "Let her go."
His wife obeys. There's nothing more for her to do. Their child wants to be alone. Sure, she can follow Kristen to her room, but she knows that Kristen needs some time alone.
There's no time for a scandal in the family.
In her room, Kristen curls into a ball on her bed, letting herself rest and forget about the bad days.
She wants something happier to happen. She can't wait to grow up. She is growing up, but slowly. Day by day.
They say her hair's getting darker, more brownish. Her clothes are starting to become smaller and smaller. She hates it when her chest becomes larger and when it hurts from her too tight bras.
They say she's growing taller. How tall is she going to be as an adult? She is only twelve and she's already taller than her own mother. She might pass her father in height.
Terrible puberty.
