"BREAKFAST IS READY!"
"KAY MOM! BE DOWN IN A MINUTE!" I called back to her from my room upstairs. I was just starting to pack for my trip, even though I was leaving this afternoon and should've been packed days ago. Where am I going?, you might ask. I get to spend the summer in Mullingar, Ireland.
My name's Erin Collins. I'm 18 and I'm from good ol' Wisconsin in the United States of America [gif of Erin in the sidebar]. I just graduated from high school and my summer vacation was about to begin! But this wasn't going to be an ordinary summer. This year, I was going to be spending the summer in Ireland. Some of you might be wondering, 'Why Ireland?' Well let me tell you. It was a family tradition to spend the summer there when you turned 18 to learn about the family heritage and meet the family we still had over there and what not. So that's where I'll be headed to spend the next three months.
My family has a very rich Irish heritage. After my grandparents came over to America years ago, they started a family and kept all sorts of Irish traditions strong in our family ever since. Of all the places to choose from, though, I have no idea why they decided to come to Wisconsin. Around here, the only thing people really do is watch football, drink beer, hunt and fish, and eat brats and cheese. There's not much to look at either besides cows and farms. But it's serene and all mine. And that's why I love it.
"Morning, Erin," Ryleigh greeted as I walked into the kitchen for breakfast. I could tell by the look in her eyes that she wasn't ready to let me leave for the summer, but she kept a smile on her face so she wouldn't ruin my excitement. She was really mature for a 14 year old girl. Most of the time she acted more mature than I did. The only thing that gave away her age was her insane obsession with One Direction. Every morning she blasted her iPod in her room and played their album. Thanks to her, I knew all the words to most of their songs and every boy's name in that band. Niall was her favorite and she was jealous that I was going to be spending the summer in his hometown. She already gave me a picture of him to get autographed if I happen to see him while I'm there.
"What were you doing up in your room, hun? Last minute packing?" Mom asked me.
"Well, umm, yeah." I tried avoiding the topic, knowing my timely mother wouldn't approve of my extreme procrastination. "Actually, I'm doing all of my packing.." I cringed as I waited for her reaction.
"You what!? ERIN! Your flight leaves in 6 hours and you haven't packed yet?! How on earth will you pack your things for the next THREE MONTHS before we leave?! You'll never be done in time!" She shrieked at me.
"I'll help her" Keela signed as she walked into the kitchen. Yes, I said signed. Keela is deaf. She lost her hearing in a car accident when she was 9. Our whole family learned sign language soon after, but Keela can also read lips, which made communicating that much easier.
Keela and I were very close. Closer than sisters would normally be. We talked about anything and everything and she was always there for me no matter what. We had the best times together. I think it had something to do with our ages only being a year apart.
We both headed upstairs and she helped me speed pack the rest of my things. In the end, I had 2 large suitcases and one carry-on for the plane. I was a very efficient packer if I do say so myself.
Soon after, our family headed out to lunch together as a sort of 'Goodbye for the summer, we'll miss you loads' meal. Even though I was beyond excited for the trip, I was dreading the goodbyes I'd soon have to say to them.
After our meal, we headed to the airport. When I was about to board my plane, I said goodbyes to all of them. My Mom, Dad, Keela, and Ryleigh all hugged me with tears in their eyes and wished me luck on my trip.
"Call us when you land sweetheart! Uncle Callum and Aunt Tara will meet you at the airport when you land in Ireland. They'll pick you up and you'll be staying with them for the summer." Even though she'd already told me this a thousand times, I knew she needed to say it again just for her sake. She just wanted to make sure I didn't get lost in a foreign country. Understandable.
"Of course I will mom." I smiled at her and the rest of my family before I boarded the plane to begin my extravagant summer.
Little did I know that this summer was going to be way more than just learning about my family history..
