HONKK!! The image of a redheaded child flashed through my mind. I saw headlights while blaring car horns and screams filled my ears before I was woken from my sleep.
“Erin? Time to get up. Breakfast is ready. Mom wants to take you out shopping later.”
For a moment I was overwhelmed with joy when I saw the redheaded boy, but it faded once I realized it was only Conor. I snapped back to reality, and tried to forget about my horrible nightmare. They always seemed to happen when I saw someone that recognized me of Alroy. Oh boy... this is going to be a long summer.
I jumped up and got in the shower, letting the water rinse off the remains of that nightmare. After I was dressed, I let my long, wavy hair dry naturally and I threw on a light shade of make-up and headed downstairs.
“So I know it’s only your first day here, but I was thinking we should go shopping today if you’re up for it. I figured it’d be a good way for you to see what it’s like around here.” Aunt Tara winked at me, signaling it was just her cover story. I knew she was just excited about finally having another girl in the house and wanted have a girls day. So I played along because I didn’t mind getting some shopping in.
“Oh yeah that works out perfect, actually, because when I was unpacking yesterday I realized I forgot my, umm… some….uhhh, I don’t know. Whatever. Let’s just go.” I was never good at lying. I tried to play along but my words get fumbled so easily, I just gave up and we left for shopping.
That was, of course, after Uncle Cal and Conor had a good laugh at my expense.
My first impression was right about Aunt Tara too. We get along swimmingly. She was so relatable and easy to talk to; she had a good sense of humor too. Nothing like the cranky Aunt’s I had back home. But I only had two in Wisconsin and they just weren’t nice people in general.
We were driving back home and singing along with the radio when Aunt Tara asked me, “How would you feel if we had a sort of get-together tonight? You know? To welcome you here and get you to meet some people. Maybe even some people around your age.”
I thought about this for a second.
I guess it probably would be a good idea for me to meet some of the people around here. Who knows, I may even find a friend. Plus, I’m sure it’d be a great way to find more about what people do around here. On the other hand, I tend to be socially awkward when I meet new people. Oh well. Might as well give it a try anyways.
I smiled, “Yeah, totally. That sounds great. I think it’d be a great way for me to find out more about Ireland. Like the culture and stuff.”
“And who says you can’t keep an eye out for a good looking lad or two?”She winked in my direction and had a cheeky grin on her lips.
I couldn't help but chuckle. Oh, Aunt Tara. You were definitely the coolest aunt ever.

We got home and started preparing everything for the get-together. Just the basic stuff: snacks, drinks, plates, napkins.
Once that was done, we all went our separate ways and took the rest of the time to get ourselves ready for this shin-dig.
It took me a while to decide what to wear. I mean, it was only a get-together, right? So I shouldn’t dress fancy. Unless that’s what a get-together is to people over here. Oh dang, I’ll just play it safe and dress casual.
I wonder how many people will be here, but I guess I’m about to find out.
My feet scuffed downstairs to the living room to find people were starting to arrive. They all looked lovely, and I was glad that I didn’t seem to be over or underdressed.
