Luke and I walked back downstairs, holding hands. He never let go of me and I was thankful for that. Being in this ginormous mansion with unfamiliar people gave me terrible anxiety.
When we walked into the kitchen, I couldn't stop looking around. My old house in Alyce Lake was smaller than their kitchen. It was the same clean and shiny white as the foyer, but some of the cabinets and the island were wooden. There were two pantries and from what I could tell they were stashed to the fullest with food. There was even a ladder in one of them.
Everyone was making something different and moving about quickly, navigating their way through the kitchen swiftly and effortlessly.
His father was making stuffed scallops with crabmeat and salmon, while his mother was making roasted chicken in garlic sauce and what seemed to be veal. She was sautéing the veal in onions and mushroom sauce. Javier was making Spanish rice and green salad dressed in olive oil. Sebastian was making steamed vegetables and some sort of soup. His sister, Mareena, appeared to be making the desserts. She was working on the flan at the moment.
Everyone was busy working on their food and dancing to the loud music that was playing in the kitchen. Right now, oddly enough, it was One Direction, "Little White Lies." Everyone knew all of the words and sang them while laughing in between verses. Mareena seemed to be the one most enjoying the song, so I assumed that she picked it out.
"Hey guys! Come join the fun!" Luke's dad yelled to us over the music. When Mareena saw Luke and I, she looked away from her flan and ran over to take Luke's hand, singing the chorus to him.
"If this room was burning/I wouldn't even notice/Cause you've been taking up my mind with your/Little white lies, little white lies!" She pulled him more into the kitchen, which meant she was also pulling me because Luke was not letting go of my hand.
I was surprised when he started singing the words with her. It made me smile, watching him entertain her like that. She was probably the happiest human I had ever seen, and her brother made her even happier. It was beautiful.
When the song ended, everyone laughed and then Luke's mother said that it was Sebastian's turn to pick a song. While he was scrolling through the phone that was sitting on the counter, Mareena was talking to Luke.
"You have to make your empanadas, Luke! I've been craving them since you left." She explained to him excitedly.
"Yea, dude. I don't know what I missed more, you or your empanadas." Javier called to him jokingly. Everyone laughed again at his statement.
"Okay, okay. Someone get me a bowl..." Luke said smiling as his mother handed him a silver bowl.
Luke pulled me closer to him and kissed my cheek softly. He put his arm around my waist and began pouring flour into the bowl.
"Do you want to help me, doll?" He asked me, beginning to stir a bunch of ingredients in a bowl.
"I don't want to mess it up..." I said quietly, looking up at him.
