"What is wrong with you!" My voice echoes around my backyard, as I try frantically to clean up the shattered remnants of a glass mason jar, filled with my saving of the last 5 years. Tears stream down my face as I pick all the glass and try to find all of the change I'd worked so tirelessly to collect and save.
I could see my older brother standing in the back doorway smirking at me. I let out chocked sobs as I wanted to throw every last shard at his face, my rage almost taking over and consumeing my body. The glass was quickly filling my hands and I needed to throw it out before I ended hurting myself. No sooner had I though this, when one of the larger pieces slipped out of my hand, leaving a large gash in my delicate palm, and again shattered into multiply pieces.
Another small cry came from my lips as I looked to my hand. I let the other shards fall to the ground, now streaked and splattered with blood. Out of the corner of my eye I saw my brother was finally gone. I let out and angry scream and ran into the house collecting a garbage bin, bandage, and a new jar. I quickly returned to find my brother crouched in front of my pile of money. "Get away from that it's mine!" I scream, surging froward. He bolts toward our side gate. Before I'm able to get to him, the gate opens and he launches out into the front yard to an unknown destination.
I feel the tears returning but I force them back down and walk over to my pile. I wrapped my hand as quickly and efficiently as I could. After I was able to dump all traces of the jar, I started collecting my money. The heap noticeably smaller then what I had previously, I wanted to scream, but instead forced that rage to boil somewhere deep inside of me. I knew I couldn't give my brother what he wanted.
I filled the jar up with my savings and took it to my room. Once I was safely in my room I bolted the door and threw the jar onto my bed. Spinning around my room on my heels I waltzed towards my closet. I rummaged around the bottom shelf for one of my hidden jars, after gathering that one I went to the one in my bathroom, under my bed, behind my books, and lastly behind mirror. I threw them all onto my bed and grabbed my suit cases and started filling all of my belongings into the bags. I know it was childish to be running away but I knew I needed to do it. I was 17 and only live with my older brother who throws parties every night and spends all of our money before I can even blink. I am the one who makes all the money, the only one who works, all I know is he'll miss me more than I'll miss him.
After I'd grabbed all of the pictures off of my wall and shoved them into my bags as carefully as possible. I sneak out of my room with my cases and down through my kitchen past my brother talking to his friends on the phone about the new party they had planned for tonight. I roll my eyes, continuing towards the garage. I successfully made it to my car and quietly put all of my things in the back. I run into the house and tell my brother that I'm going out and not to wait up for me. He shrugs me off and tells me he doesn't care.
I take my keys off the key ring in our refrigerator and out to my car. I smile knowing that I'll never have to see this house again. I drive to the bank to exchange my coins for paper bills. I walk into the building with a bag that weighed almost 40 pounds. I look around to see offices with offical dressed people typing away at keyboards with bored expressions on their faces. I walk over to the front desk and place my bag down on the counter top and a shocked looking worker came over.
"How may I help you?" Questioned the male worker, obviously cautious of the bag I have.
"I have 5 jars of coins that I want to change for bills, as well as withdraw all of the money in my account." I inform the man, his face noticeably lights up at my words. I want to laugh at his reaction, obviously thinking that I was here to rob him.I zip open the heavy black bag and hand it over the counter, the man takes it back and comes back with a receipt and the bag full of now empty jars. "What bills would you like this in?" He asks handing me the amount that I had brought in. I quickly glance down at the slip of paper and my eyes almost shoot out of my head.
$600 I want to cry, the last 5 years had paid off, even with the amount my brother had stolen from me. "I'm I'll take hundreds, fifties, and twenties." I say giving him a smile. He goes back behind the wall and returned with my money. Next he asks what I want the rest of my money in. I tell him and he returned with that as well. I thank him with a smile and head out. I start on my long journey with my wallet now full. I drive to the edge of town before stopping at a gas station to fill my tank and grab a few snacks to keep me from starving.
After I filled up I started on my way, to see my small town for the last time.
