Jen was scrubbing the rust off of some of the pet's cages. She wiped her forehead and sat back. Lizzie peered in through the door.
"Jen!"
"What?"
Lizzie sat down next to her friend. "The king installed a new mailbox! It's really cool."
"Okay...?" Jen stood up and walked over to the doors, flipping the sign over so now it said CLOSED. "Since when were mailboxes cool, anyway?"
"You don't get it," Lizzie huffed. "It's cool. Very cool indeed. Come look!" She grabbed Jen's hand and tugged her out of the pet shop.
Jen stared at an ordinary mailbox. She narrowed her eyes and gave Lizzie an "Are you serious?" face. "Really, Liz?"
Lizzie went red. She glared back. "It doesn't work like a normal mailbox, Jen. It can deliver letters to anyone, no matter where they are. The could be in the middle of the forest and get a letter. All you have to do is walk up with your letter, say the name of the person you want it delivered to, and put it in. The mailbox will disappear and transport itself to the person. They could write back."
"Did you say... anyone?" Jen stammered.
Lizzie paused. "Yes. Anyone. Even someone in another planet! It is so amazi- hey! Where are you going?!"
Jen hurried into her shop and closed the door, locking it. She wanted to write Pat a letter without Lizzie seeing. She went into the supply closet and pulled out a paper and a pen. Ducking behind her desk, she sat down on the floor and wondered what to write.
"Dear Pat," she mumbled, scribbling it down. She paused and wrote, I miss you... I think.
That sounds so stupid. Jen didn't know what to write so she wrote, "From, Jen." She folded up the letter and walked outside, tucking the note in her pocket. Lizzie was gone, probably searching for her. Jen slowly approached the mailbox.
"Furious Destroyer," she whispered softly, and slipped the letter inside before she could regret it.
There was quite a loud whooshing sound, and the mailbox was gone. Jen turned away, her heart thumping.
