The woods were dark and lonely, the cold beauty of the full moon shining through the bare canopy of the trees. There was a fog hanging in the cold air, and if I had been fully human, and able to actually feel the cold, I might have shivered. I took a step, and then I heard it, a twig snapped to the right of me, and I froze, melting into the black shadows around me.
In the distance, I heard the sirens and the barking of dogs. I felt my insides grow cold, and then, I smelt something, it would have been the most delicious scent I’d ever smelled —which probably meant it was blood— but it was tainted with the scent of animal and decay that made my senses recoil in disgust.
I didn’t want to move, I knew by the signs posted everywhere that I wasn’t supposed to be in here this late at night. But I’d needed to hunt, and if for right now that meant animals, then I guess my vampire instincts were going to have to suck it up and try to keep down the retched animal blood.
I knew I had to move before the dogs found my scent, they’d probably smell the wolf, it was at the height of its power tonight with the full moon blazing above and making my wolf restless. That was the other reason I was out in the woods tonight. My vampire side might need blood regularly, but every month the bloodlust for my wolf came out too. It was just too hard to resist feeding on nights like this.
I turned and started to run away, using my vampire speed to get me the heck out of there, when I heard them.
“Just out of curiosity, which half of the body are we looking for?” It was a guy’s voice, he sounded around sixteen or so. Although that could be wrong, voices often disguised how old a person really was. Everything can be deceiving. It’s a lesson you learn well from being a vampire. Looks never tell the truth.
“Huh, didn’t think about that,” another boy replied. This one sounded as young as the second, and I waited, hoping there was only the two of them.
“What if we get killed?” The first boy asked, “What if the person who killed the body is still out here?”
I leaned back against my tree. There was a murderer out here? I nearly burst into laughter, I had killed people before, but this time, the blood wasn’t on my hands. Obviously whoever these two guys were they didn’t have very much thought in their brains. A killer had cut some girl in half and they were out here, looking for the other half of her body. Idiots. I bet neither of them even had a weapon on them.
“Also something I didn’t think about,” said the second, pulling me out of my thoughts. My head snapped up, and I saw a beam of light coming through the trees. Crap. Not wanting to be found by two idiot teenagers who would tell the police they saw a girl in the woods, I scaled the trees in a matter of seconds, hiding between the bare branches and praying to God that they didn’t have the sense to look up.
“It’s comforting to know,” the first boy sounded out of breath as he spoke, “that you thought this out with your usual attention to detail.”
“I know.”
“Maybe the severe asthmatic should be the one holding the flashlight,” said the first, still wheezing. They were within my line of sight now, and the first boy stopped to lean against a tree, pulling out an inhaler. He was wearing a red hoodie and the hood was covering his face, probably from the cold. The second was wearing a gray jacket that was unzipped, obviously unfazed by the cold.
They ran a few steps forwards, and then scrambled and lie down on the ground, looking at something nearby. Ahead of them was a line of steady glowing orbs, and I could make out the sounds of shuffling footsteps, sniffing dogs, and low voices. The lights soon revealed themselves to be flashlights held by police officers.
