Cloves POV
I cannot believe that this is happening. I was just reaped to be playing in a game with my two best friends and my boyfriend.I was standing on a pedestal in the blaring sun. I thought about what my mentor, Enobaria, had said to me, your stronger than you seem. You may be small but when you have big dreams you'll be undefeatable.
Her first rule was to observe your surroundings. All around us was a thick forest. I was kind of bummed because I wanted something interesting, or at least some place you can find someone. The trees seemed tall, but there was not exactly any visible source of water, Unless you went to the Cornucopia.
Her second rule was to head strait for the cornucopia. She said that this year we shouldn't ally, since the three of us are careers. And also I HATE the district one people. The girls are all pretty and wouldn't care less if you were dead, they'd be too busy getting dirt out from under their nails. I also hated district eleven. Years ago, when only one male and female district could be reaped, someone named Thresh killed my Great Great Great Great Grandmother. He was from district eleven. I am named after her now with the beautiful name of Clove.
Third, get a knife. Knife skills ran through my family, like throwing knifes and never missing. Ever. Maybe whoever hands this is in may be a victim of my next murder. Soon, the clock started counting down. They now kept a giant clock to cover up a hole that some district twelve archer had made in the arena.
10,9...Im really excited yet nervous. I look around the pedestals to see if Bailey and Gracie were anywhere in sight. I turned my focus back to the clock. They'd come to the cornucopia anyways.
8,7... I don't exactly want to kill anyone, but I will make it out alive. If they challenge me I'll challenge them.
6,5...I forgot that I had to grab Gracies bow as well. I still could not believe president snow was evil enough to send 66 tributes most likely to their death bed. The boy next to me was small and shaking, looking scared. I laughed to myself, even though inside I was scared as well. Two of the district one boys were good with the axe and spear.
4,3... I remembered right before I left on the train that I would keep my promise to my little brother Nathan, I would make it out alive.
2,1...The gong sounded, the overhead clock winded to one o'clock, the time we would always start the games.
Bailey, Gracie and I darted off of our pedestals, sprinting like cheetahs, easily taking the lead, about thirteen others following behind. The closest to us was a girl with curly brown hair. Soon we reached the center and lunged for anything useful. While other tributes where already fighting over goodies like backpacks and water, I headed strait to the heart of the cornucopia. I was searching for my knives that I had used at the Training Room. I saw a leather vest with knives starting from as big as a mouse to as large as a sword. I ran and scooped it up, the leather sending chills through my body as I put it on. I took the hand sizes knife out of its inside pocket and held it in my left hand, Gracie's bow in my right. I stopped in my tracks when I heard Gracies ear piercing scream, not the scream she'd yell when you scared her, but the scream she'd yell to her death bed. I turned and saw a District 5 black haired boy throw a spear directed to Gracies head. She dodged to the left, nearly missing her skull, as the spear flew and took a chunk of skin and hair off her head. I threw my knife and let it fly, aiming for his smug smile. The knife veered down, putting the impact to his neck. I cursed under my breath.
Gracie galloped to my side, handing me my knife. "Give me the bow. And thanks." She said, elbowing an attempted attacker to her right. I handed her the shining silver bow.
"Where is the quiver you idiot!?" She basically yelled at me. Oh shoot. I had forgotten her stupid quiver.
"I forgot it." I said, stabbing a boy who came up to Gracie. "Go find it."She said, picking up an axe and running off. My eyes searched for the matching quiver. I check the dead bodies and everything, Until I saw her. She was an innocent seeming District seven girl holding the Quiver. As a district 1 girl charged at her, she stabbed them with an arrow . She seemed like one of those girls that could use her smarts to sike everyone out. Not so innocent anymore, Huh?
I started running after her when she was heading away from the cornucopia. She reached down for a backpack and my knife whipped her head up. There was a slight cut on her forehead, me wishing it were deeper. She seemed surprised by the impact ( Even though she is at the BLOODBATH) and fell over onto her toosh. I started towards her and began to rip the backpack from her. She had a strong grip on it, like her life depended on it. I brewed with anger inside that she thought she could outsmart me and my friends.
She wiped her forehead with her hand and looked at me in fear. Just give up already, I dont have to kill you, you know, but I hate you already. I thought in my head. I started to pull the knife out of my vest when she started pleading for her life.
"Please, no no! I have a family! They need me!"
She pleaded and let go of the backpack. She went forward to run and I slammed my knife down. I caught the side of her pants, and she looked back at me in terror. I lunged and grabbed the quiver, leaving her to hopefully die.
I ran over to Gracie and gave her her quiver. Bailey had already bandaged up Gracies head and had gone out for a hunt. I did not know where our district 2 boys had run off to, but I was worried about Luke. Gracie was in no condition to fight. Everyone was dead that was currently here. The cannons started to go off, signalling 23 dead. Back in the days that would mean that there was a victor, but there were a lot of people this year. I decided to wait for Bailey to come back and go through some of the backpacks. May the odds be ever in our favor! :(
