Josiah immediately started to regret his decision of walking through the building's doors. As he stepped foot on one of the dusty and unadjusted door mats, he was met with a loud and a crowded hallway filled with what he assumed to be the kids in his grade. Dumbstruck yet anxiety-filled, the boy froze in his tracks as his breathing quickened slightly. It almost felt as if the world had stopped spinning in the matter of seconds, like if he had stepped forward the ground would crumble beneath him. Piece by piece, that floor would break and shatter if he dared to take a single step, leaving him to trip into a wide, dark abyss. Falling endlessly, with no help of a familiar face or a new friend.
His thoughts were then abruptly interrupted as someone was harshly shoved into his shoulder, causing him to stumble and fall onto his side. A groan was heard from the unaware boy, rolling onto his other side in the process to attempt to get back up.
"Oh shit! Dude, are you okay?"
A genuinely worried voice asked him.
"What the fuck, man? Why do you have to shove me into people all the goddamn time?!"
Exclaimed another voice, laced with frustration. Josiah, with some struggle, sat up just in time to see who the culprits were. His brown eyes flicked to the first form he saw, a rather tall form to add. He looked up to find a rough yet soft face of a boy. He had raven-like hair that contrasted with his pale skin accompanied with soft milk chocolate eyes; beauty marks and piercings topped off the look.
Josiah couldn't help but stare as he felt like the world had stopped spinning. As his universe felt like a stop motion film, his heart started to beat out his chest. He's never had this type of reaction towards another fellow male, but he wasn't going to complain about. The boy was quite attractive after all.
"Are you just going to gawk at me or are you going to take my hand?"
The boy asked with a sort of gravely tone. Josiah was snapped out of his trance as the world began spinning again, now looking at the other boy's hand. He gladly took it into his own as he stood up with the help of the possible new friend, seeing that the world didn't crumble underneath his delicate footstep.
"Sorry, you just... you just caught me off guard."
He said in a quiet tone, barely audible for the two he came in contact with to hear him.
"... what? Listen, pipsqueak, you need to-"
"What he's trying to say is could you speak up a bit please?"
The rough boy's friend said with a smile, showing off her shiny white and black banded braces. Josiah's face scrunched up slightly at the rude figure, but turned and smiled in return to the kind girl. She had long blonde hair that was brushed behind her shoulders, shiny blue eyes glimmering as she smiled up at him. Her face was plastered with freckles as well.
"... My name is Josiah and I'm new here, could you two possibly help me out?"
He asked in his kindest voice, refusing to face the boy and choosing to fully face the girl instead. The rude boy made a small annoyed 'Tch' sound and crossed his arms over his chest, looking away from the current situation being played before him.
"Yeah! I'm Laura, and this is my friend Reid,"
She then leaned a bit closer and placed a hand by her mouth, whispering to Josiah.
"Sorry. My friend, Reid, he's a pretty grumpy guy. He'll get used to you though."
She said, giggling as she winked. The girl, figuratively, had a good aura around her. She was kind and was honestly the purest person that he's ever come across; If only he met more people like this in the day.
Josiah, giving the smallest sigh, turns to look at the taller male once again that stood next to the eager girl. He raised an eyebrow, slowly crossing his arms over his chest. Reid returned the same expression, growing irritated.
"Are you going to properly introduce yourself, grumpy gills?"
Laura asked her friend, gently nudging him in the rips. As she did that, Reid gave her a small glare and nudged her back, mumbling something towards her before facing the smaller male again.
"... My name is Reid Winters."
This made Josiah slowly smile, bringing his hand out for Reid to shake it.
"My name is Josiah Amsden, it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance."
Reid lazily shook the other's hand, scoffing at him.
"Yeah, no. We're not acquaintances. I have no idea where you got that thought."
Josiah's smile soon faded as he removed his hand from the other boy's hand, his expression becoming one of frustration; annoyance. "How can someone be so rude," Josiah thought to himself, genuinely confused of the fellow male's actions. Immediately sensing the tension between the two, Laura let out a small spurt of nervous laughter, shoving herself in between the two.
"Well, Reid, you can probably go to your classes, I'll catch up with you after I help Josiah find his locker and his first hour."
She suggested to her talker friend, who only answered with a grunt and made no effort to leave. She then looked over at Josiah who looked as if he was about to burst out with anger at any moment. Gently placing a hand on the other's shoulder, Laura gave the boy a friendly smile, starting down the hallway.
"Like I said, he'll get used to you. He's just not very good with communication."
"He's annoying."
Josiah said simply.
