The following morning Shayla found herself on post-op duty. She carefully checked off and attended to the patients, all the time aware that her brother was dying for an opportunity to say something to her. She knew he must have seen her kiss Radar and was searching for a chance to tease her about it.
Taking the clipboard off the hook of the next patient's bed, Shayla felt Hawkeye's presence behind her.
"Everything seems to be going ok here." She told him.
Hawkeye took the clipboard from her and ran a finger down the list.
"Yep, looks like this young man will be as right as rain in a couple of days. Thank-you, Nurse O'Reilly." Hawkeye handed back the clipboard to Shayla and walked towards the next patient, hiding a grin.
"Ben..." Shayla warned. It was hard to stay with an angry tone. She knew he had a legitimate reason to tease her in that manner and she couldn't help but notice there was a nice ring to Shayla O'Reilly. If she was honest, she quite liked it the sound of it.
Moving on to the next patient, Shayla let her brother's comment dissolve. She had no comeback so there was no point prolonging it.
"How are we today?" BJ asked the patient that Shayla held the notes for.
"Little better, thanks, Doc." The patient replied.
Shayla passed the notes to BJ. She figured he would need them soon.
"Gotta watch this one. Never know when she's gonna drag you away from your duties and kiss you in public." BJ smirked at Shayla as he took the clipboard from her.
"Oh haha, very funny! Why is everyone making such a big deal about a kiss? It's not like no one's ever kissed someone at a party before." Shayla was genuine in her query. Her brother she could understand, but why everyone else was so keen to point out what she had done and crack jokes about it was a mystery to her.
"Yeah, but not Radar. Remember that." BJ told her. He replaced the clipboard on the hook and walked away.
Shayla paused. BJ was right. She should remember that. What was a normalised action for her was a whole different world for Radar. She should respect that more and take consideration to what that meant to him opposed to what it meant to her.
While her mind pondered on this thought, she moved to the next bed. Picking up the clipboard, she walked the side of the patient and sat on the stall that was between the beds.
"How are you feeling today, Jeremy?" Shayla asked after glancing at the notes.
"Oh much better now you're here." Jeremy looked up at Shayla.
"I'm not the one making you better!" Shayla replied with a smile. She liked the guy's enthusiasm but she didn't want him to get the wrong impression.
"Yes, you are, Amy. You always make things better."
Shayla frowned. Jeremy was clearly still affected by the anaesthetic.
He grabbed hold of her hand and pulled it close to him. Shayla let him, understanding he probably didn't know what he was doing. When he started kissing her hand, Shayla tried to draw it back.
"That's starting to be inappropriate, Private." Shayla warned as he showed no signs of relinquishing her hand.
"Don't be silly, Amy. There's no one here." Jeremy tugged Shayla's hand, aiming to pull her towards him. Shayla resisted, causing the stall to drag along the floor, creating a horrible screech.
The sound made the whole ward wince. The two doctors turned to find the cause. Hawkeye didn't like what he saw.
Winding his way through the beds, he was at Shayla's side in a flash.
