I woke up in a strange place. Where was I. I looked over to see my dad sitting in a chair.
"Dad." I called out. I dint hear me say anything. He ran to my side.
He said something but o couldn't hear. He kept speaking his mouth kept moving. He ran to the door and said something with in seconds two doctors ran into the room.
I looked down and saw tubes in my mouth. That's when I freaked out. My dad ran to me. He started to stroke my hair.
The female doctor turned to me and said something. I couldn't hear her why couldn't I hear her. I have no response. She looked me in the eyes and said something.
This was a lot to take in. I wanted to say something.
She sent her partner out and when he came back he had a note pad in his hand. She grabbed it and wrote.
"Hello Skylar I am doctor Phillps. You are here because of a car accident hat occurred on June 14, 2017."I pointed to the note pad then pointed to myself. She handed me the note pad and pen. I wrote.
"If this happened on June 14, 2017, what day is it?" I held it up to her. She grabbed the notepad and pen out of my hands. Then she turned it to me.
"Today is September 19, 2017. You have been in a coma for a little over three months."
I looked at my dad in disbelief. But he just nodded. When I looked back the doctor had already written some thing.
" I turned my head side to side sighing. As a result of the crash both of your eardrums have disconnected tissue . A piece of glass cut your ear canal pretty badly."
What. I thought. I watched as she scribbled more.
"This has resulted in permanent deafness in both ears. And we already knew about your bad hearing already."
This set up an appointment today or tomorrow with our Audio tester if you like." I nodded. "Alright I will talk to her." With that she left. I looked on the table next to my bed there was the note pad.
My dad came over to talk to me. He said something and his words made no sense to me. I tried to tell me dad to not try to talk but he didn't listen. I soon yelled.
"Dad!" I saw his mouth stop moving. I pointed to my ears then reminded him that they didn't work. Then pointed to the note pad.
He ran to the side of my bed and grabbed the note pad off the desk then started scribbling. He turned it to me and I read it.
"Skylar. It so good to see you I am so happy to see that you are alive. Your mother is going to be so happy to know your safe."
"Yeah she will..." I said a loud.
My dad turned to me then held up a finger that said give me one second. He pulled out his phone. And started to call my mom. I watched him as he stood there the phone still calling my mom. He set the note pad on the bed. Then my mom picked up and I saw my Dad's lips moving. He then started to cry. I saw tears run down his face then he wiped His nose and eyes.
My dad came over to me and grabbed the note book the wrote.
"Your mother wants to hear your voice. Is that ok?"
I nodded. He handed me the phone. I put it to my ear. "Mom? Hey it's me I'm ok."
I felt the vibrations on the phone then handed it back to my father. I watched as his facial expressions turned from happy to serious. I still watched him as he turned his back to me. Then he hung up the phone.
He came back then sat on the bed I scooted back a little bit. Giving him a bigger space to sit.
"Your mother is coming to see you in a couple of minutes she on her way."
"Ok." I said aloud
My dad cringed. I read his lips and watched his hand moments. "little too loud."
"Sorry dad."
"It's okay." He replied.
I started to cry. My dad put his hand on my knee.
"Hey...sh..sh..sh...its ok your gonna be fine."
I looked in his eyes and kept crying.
"Dad. Right now...just then I can't hear what you said...an...and...that's the problem....D...dad...I can t hear.
My dad didn't hear me I must have been whispering.
"Dad....I...I can't hear." I kept crying and it made so I only said a few words before I kept sobbing.
I watched as my dad clicked then pen the wrote on the pad. "I understand everything is going to be different. And you will have to adjust to the changes."
I looked at him. He had a sympathetic look on his face. I reached for the note pad and pen then wrote on them.
"But dad how am I going to go to school. My grades I worked so hard for them." My brain wandered I started thinking about school and tests. I didn't even realize that my dad had taken the note pad and pen. I thought tests... then I remember Sophie.
I turned to my dad and yelled.
"Sophie! What about Sophie! Does she know! Oh....! She probably thinks I blew her off!"
My dad put his hands on my shoulders. "Hey..! Hey...! It's ok! She knows and she going to be very happy to see you." He pause for a moment
"You don't need to yell." Those last few words were the only words I could make out.
"Sorry... I can't tell!
"Anyways.." He wrote. "I am not sure what we are going to do... but we will figure something out."
"Yeah..."
"I promise."
We both sat there in silence for a while. My dad grabbed my hand and held it in his. I stared at my dads face I could see scars. He had one or two on his forehead. And a couple of his cheeks and chin. But the most distinct one was the one that was on his bottom lip, and it cut from his lip to half way down his chin diagonally. I could still see bruises, but they were mostly healed.
I looked at my dad closer. His hazel-green eyes that matched my own. Except mine were more green. And his dark brown hair parted on the side... the sides buzzed with a little more hair on top.
I couldn't hear him so I watched him. Not having sounds a distract me it was very easy to observe. Every once and a while my father would look into the hall and we would watch as doctors walked by. Every time I would watch as he would turn his head to sounds... and every time I would watch as he would turn his head with hope but wouldn't see a familiar face.
After, what it felt like hours, he fell asleep waiting for her face to show in my hospital bedroom. He lay to the left of my bed asleep in a chair.
How could he sleep I thought. This horrible thing had happen to us. It scares me just thinking about it.
Stop! I told myself. You don't have to think about it. My mind is still racing. I looked down at the bed. I saw a shadow.
I looked up...mom...
I yelled after my dad.
"DAD!" He didn't respond. I grabbed a pillow from behind me, and hit him with it. As I did that I yelled it again. This time he woke up. He looked at me then I pointed my head to mom.
"Dalene." My dad said happy to see her.
"Mom!" I almost jumped out of my bed. I hadn't seen her in four months. She had been an a business trip. "MOM!" I watched as a single tear fell off her face.
