"Mom!" I said crying. She rushed to me. She leaned over and hugged me. I watched as her lips kept moving really fast. What was she saying.
I tapped her. "Mom." I pointed to my ears then shook my head. She stood there confused.
"You didn't tell her." I said looking at my father. he just turned his head the other direction. I grabbed the note pad and flipped back some of the pages. I flipped to the page where the doctor had told me about my ears. She read that same page aloud. I could tell causes her lips were moving.
"Skylar Mudson I am doctor Philips. You are here because of a crash that resulted on June 14, 2017. As a result of the crash both of your eardrums have disconnected tissue. A piece of glass cut your ear canal pretty badly. And both ear canals are caved in wards." She put her hand over her mouth.
"Wait there's more I said."
"This has resulted in permanent deafness in both ears. And we already knew about your bad hearing."
I set the note pad on the desk. I watched her. She ran over to my father hugged him and she cried on his shoulder. I could see my dad was trying to comfort her. He kept shushing her. I watched his mouth say things to help comfort her.
Eventually she let go and she ran over to me. I watched them with blurry vision. I had been crying with out a sound apparently because neither of them noticed.
She came and kneeled by my bed. I watched her. She reached out and put her hand in my cheek. She looked at me with a loving and compassionate look. I wiped my tears away.
She turned to my dad her back facing me. I watched for a moment then looked to my father. I saw a few words leave his lips. I could tell what they were. He really emphasized them.
"I don't know!" I saw signs of him starting to get angry. My dad started to use his hands to express something. Then my mom threw her hands in the air.
"Stop!" I yelled, but apparently I didn't because the hand gestures kept coming. "Stop! Stop!" I yelled although it felt like I was screaming. They both looked at me. "Stop." I said half crying. My parents stopped. There faces immediately changed from mad to ashamed.
Then suddenly both of turned their head to the doorway. It was Doctor Phillps. She came and grabbed the note pad. Then scribbled something. I read it.
"Our audio technician will see you. Let me take out those I.V.'s." She took them out.
"Follow me." Her hand said. I stepped out of the bed and almost fell to my knees. The doctor caught me. She put my arm around her neck. She started walking then stopped right in front of my parents. Then she said something and my parents nodded. Then we walked out of the room then down the long hallway. We took a couple of turns I didn't really keep track. Then we made it. A sign read Audio technican. She stopped and slowly took my arm off of her neck then leaned me against the wall. She opened the door then it closed behind her. Soon the door swung open and I jumped
"Sorry." She mouthed. Then I walked in to a room with machines. A man with a smile stood there. He then started to do ASL I could tell because I knew some. The doctor rushed over to him and said something then he stopped moving his hands. The doctor grabbed a different note pad. I could tell became the top had a blue lining not yellow.
She wrote.
"We will put this sort of hat on your head. It will monitor your brains activity. When you hear the waves reach your ear then your brain then work to translate it into words or sounds. When you can't hear your brain doesn't work to translate it." She flipped another page and began again. "We will just monitor your brain and when you hear something tell us." She grabbed something that looked like a hair net. Then put it on my head.
He started the machine. I focused really hard.
The doctor looked at me. I shook my head. She repeated this process five or six times. Then he turned off the machines. She walked over to me took off the thing then we stood up and walked back to my room. I walked through the door way and my parents rose to their feet. The doctor walked me to my bed then sat me down. Then I tucked my legs in as she walked over to my parents. She talked with them. Then she came over to me. And picked up the original note pad.
"You heard nothing so we are going to get you hearing aids. As soon as we get you hearing aids you can be discharged. We will try to get you an appointment tonight get so you can leave tomorrow morning." I looked at her and she nodded and walked away but stopped at my parents then walked out.
I looked at the clock it read 10:30. I only had the night to survive. My mom tapped my shoulder, apparently I had spaced out. She held the note pad in front of me.
"You should try and get some sleep." It read. "I will wake you up when the doctor comes back." I nodded, but on the inside I knew I wasn't getting any sleep. I watched as both my parents watched me as I closed my eyes. Then pitch black.
"Just making sure one of us is paying attention." I said whilst smiling. He rested one of his hands on my knee. Then squeezed my thigh.
"Dad!" I squirmed. The light turned green and then the car came again. Crash. Bang.
I woke up in tears and I could feel myself screaming. My parents rushed to my side. My mom put her hand on my face wiping my tears, and my dad put his hand in mine and held it.
I kept crying and with my blurry vision my mom sat on the bed with me hugging me. Then my dad rushed to the other side and sat to, stroking my hair. I don't know how long we sat there, but it felt like a while. I soon stopped crying and looked up at the clock. 11:15.
I then fell asleep on my dads shoulder my mom on the other side.
I soon woke up to my parents shaking me. I opened my eyes and doctor Philps was there waiting at the back of the room. I looked at the clock 12:10.
She spoke.
"Sorry...." That was the only word I got from her mouth. I turned to my mom.
"It's ok." I saw her lips say.
She grabbed the notepad off of the desk and then wrote.
"Sorry it's so late but we can get you those hearing aids now. Your parents can come if you want. Follow me please." She put the note pad down and gestured for me to follow her. I turned to my parents and nodded. They both got off of the bed and followed me and the doctor. We walked down the same hallway I had before, except this time we came to a different room. She opened the door and gestured for us to go in.
I sat on a chair and the lady smiled. She looked at the doctor then her hands moved like the other guy. The doctor turned to my parents then said something. Then the doctor grabbed a note pad and started writing.
"Hi, I am Marie Pygon I am the hearing aid specialist here at the hospital. I am deaf as well so I will be using ASL." I nodded she signed some more. The doctor turned to my parents. Then wrote.
"So with hearing aids you want them to fit just right. If they are too small on the band they hurt your ear. If they are too big they don't stay. If they are..." she flipped to a new page. "Too small in your ear canal they don't stay. If that are to big in your ear canal it can be really painful. We also want one that can increase your hearing." She paused and flipped he page. "Hearing aids usually for deaf people they don't hear much but we will try."
"Ok." I said aloud
"This process can take a while." She wrote. I nodded.
The lady ran to the shelf. She grabbed little ones tan ones that go right into your ear.
"Try that." The doctor wrote.
I put them in my ears and noticed they were a little small and they were kinda falling out."
I turned to the specialist and showed her that they were small.
She turned back to the shelf and brought out multiple pairs then set them on the table.
I then tried one that went in my ear and around my ear and was purple. O tried outing it in my ears but they were to big.
I tried in multiple pairs that she had set on the table, until it came to the last one. They were like the purple but were tan colored instead. I tried them on they went in to my ear nicely and around my ear nicely to.
"Good?" The doctor wrote. I nodded "Ok turn them on." I flipped a switch and then waited for anything. "Tell me if you can hear this." She wrote. She stomped her foot. I shook my head. Then she started clapping. I shook my head. She kept clapping and faintly ever so slightly I could hear her clapping my eyes widen as I nodded.
My parents came and knelt beside me. Each of them hugging me. I smiled for the first time since I had been in this hospital. I turned to the doctor and she smiled. I turned to Mrs. Pygon and she smiled to. Doctor Phillps grabbed the note pad.
"Let's get you back to bed then in the morning we will do all the paper work."
I nodded and smiled. I ran over and hugged Doctor Phillps.
"Thank you." I said aloud. I ran over to Mrs. Pygon and hugged her and signed thank you. She smiled with a shocked face and said your welcome. Then Doctor Phillps opened the door and showed me back to my room. I walked through the door of my hospital bed room and sat down on my bed. Doctor Phillps held up the note pad and it read.
"At night take your hearing aids out and put them some where safe. Ok?" She started to walk out.
"Wait!" I called. She stopped and turned to look at me.
"How do you know ASL?" I asked aloud. She wrote on the note pad.
"My younger brother was born with really bad hearing and needed hearing aids when he was eight he got hit by a car and lost all of his hearing. Me and my entire family learned ASL to communicate with him." She smiled then signed some thing that I couldn't understand. Then finger spelled.
"And you can learn it to." She smiled and signed "I loved working with you." Then she walked out. My parents came to my side.
I looked to them and they were smiling. My mom hugged me and smiled even bigger. I looked to my dad and he signed.
"I love you." I was filled with surprise. He said something else that I didn't understand.
"I didn't know you knew ASL dad." I said aloud. He grabbed the note pad.
"I learned in college, and I haven't really used it sense."
"That's so cool." I said aloud.
My dad wrote something else.
"A little quieter Skylar."
"Sorry." I said aloud hoping it was quieter.
He scribbled on the note pad again.
"Let's get you to sleep." I nodded I was kinda tired already.
I took out my hearing aids and set them on the desk.
My dad kissed me goodnight first then my mom. Then I laid down and closed my eyes and went to sleep.
