Zombie Apocalypse

I crept slowly along the sidewalk with a gun in my hand, praying I wouldn't have to shoot. My back was to Anna, who scoured the entire area with her binoculars. We continued along the sidewalk, occasionally checking around the corner of a building for Walkers. Yes, I am extremely aware that those are what the zombies were called on the once popular television show The Walking Dead, but all those actors are gone anyway so what does it matter.

A piece of glass shattering ahead brought me back to my senses. Anna gripped her sword and I raised my gun steadily towards the sound. We both raised our bandanas over our mouths and walked silently around the broken down cars in the street. She counted to three with her fingers and jumped into the path. I tensed as she rose her sword and swung.

A small surprised exclamation came from someone in front of her and I ran to Anna. Daniel sat on the floor looking surprised but relieved to see us. I rolled my eyes and helped him up from his vulnerable position.

"You're going to attract more Walkers you idiot. Get up." Anna said quietly.

"Shut up I was doing fine, I found a store stocked with some cans and came back to find you guys and I ran into someone.." He responded, looking down and the dead Walker in front of him and the one Anna just killed.

I looked closer at the now permanently dead woman on the floor. Her blonde hair now matted with gooey dark blood and smeared with dirt. Her mouth was covered with blood and her skin dangled around her cheeks and eyes. It wasn't a pretty sight to see, but I'd gotten used to the gruesome looks of the Walkers. Daniel seemed to recognize what was left of her and I felt the curiosity rising up in me, but I held it down, not wanting to pry.

"Where are the other two?" I asked in a hurry to break the eerie silence.

"Dunno, said they went back to get you and never showed up again."

I looked at him with wide eyes and ran a hand through my tangled hair. "Where did they walk off to?" I asked exasperatedly

"I'll show you but we have to backtrack to the store and get food." He responded and walked off.

I glanced at Anna and we followed him, careful not to make sounds. We walked for a while before he pointed out the store and warned us of the many Walkers that were around there earlier. We silently crawled through the broken glass door and into the store. As cautious as could be, we piled cans of food and water into our backpacks. I saw a dropped stool on the floor and righted it, climbing my way up.

My eyes scoured the store and saw that we were the only occupants. I jumped off the stool and finished gathering what I could carry. Daniel suddenly stiffened and turned around. Anna felt his sudden movement and turned as well. I gripped my hand on the machete stuck to my belt.

A hand went over my mouth and yanked me backwards behind a display. I panicked and kicked my legs out, hoping to grab the attention of my group. "Stop! Your drawing attention!" whispered Cameron. I was released from his grip and set down.

"God dammit Cam don't ever do that again." I whispered back. "Where were you?" I asked

"I went after you and Anna with Dylan and Mikey but I got caught up with some walkers. We got separated and I trailed them here when you idiots decided to waltz in. Now shut up they moved toward the back but I'm sure they saw you when your idiot self decided to climb on top of something." He scolded

I squinted my eyes at him but stayed quiet nonetheless. He motioned to the aisles where I last saw Anna and Daniel. If I tried hard enough I could see them creeping along the aisles, checking their back every so often. They were in clear view of any Walkers hiding amongst the shelves.

"We need to get them and get out of here." I whispered to Cam. He nodded and peeked around the corner, his brown hair flopping over his face. I saw him squint and then whip back to where we hid, a panicked look set on his face. He tried to mask his fear when he turned to me but I already understood the look on his face, there were a lot more Walkers than we thought.

I cursed under my breath and grabbed my machete from my side, preparing to swing at whatever blocked my way. Cameron and I agreed that we would run through the store and outside, yelling for Anna and Daniel as we made our dash to escape. It was a completely stupid and reckless plan, no doubt going to trap us in here, but if we didn't get out we would die anyway.

I took a breath and held it before dashing out of my hiding place. The second I moved I heard a loud grunt. I kept moving, hearing the sliding and uneven footsteps of the undead behind me. I didn't really think there'd be any Runners.

I turned to see behind me and shrieked when I realized four Runners were on my tail. Imagine fused together bones running after you, flesh hanging in random bits. That's all Runners were, and sometimes it was hard to believe they were all once human. I sprinted as quickly as I could down the aisle, seeing Anna in battle with two Walkers, two sneaking up behind her.

As I dashed past I swung my machete and cut both their heads off clean, not even hesitating to grip her shirt and drag her along with me. We sprinted our way through the store, occasionally slicing off heads and limbs. I heard the wild footsteps of Runners and I counted to three, knowing Anna would know what to do. Then we skidded to a stop and turned, swinging with all our might until it connected with the Runner's necks. The second our blades struck gold we ran. We surprisingly made it to the entrance, where Daniel and Cameron stood frozen at the door. I yelled at them to move but the sheer terror on their face stopped me.

Directly in front of our only escape were dozens of Walkers, Runners, and Crawlers. My breath caught in my throat as I realized we were probably doomed. I looked back and saw the horde coming at us from behind. I held my breath and turned around, preparing to go down fighting. I heard something being dragged in front of the door and I closed my eyes, counting to three before snapping them open and running straight into the undead horde.
