Redmayne – Five Letters

Okay so apologies for this being so long. And for all of the feels should you feel any. If not that's okay, but know that Eddie surely did. I had decided to do this because today is ANZAC day. I've been writing this since about 9 o'clock. It's 3:23 now. I do hope you enjoy. Lest We Forget.

"Eddie, I know that because you brought Stephen Wraysford, a fictional soldier in the Great War to life, you may think that you know what it's like. But you don't Eddie! You never will! Until you're out there, on the front lines, fighting for your country, family, friends and freedom first hand, you never will truly be able to understand how difficult it is. You'll never know the hardships, the risks that can either keep you alive for a minute longer or can kill not only you, but the entire platoon." ________ yelled at the misunderstanding male before them. They truly didn't mean to hurt his feelings, but through telling him how difficult it truly is to be out there on the front line, crystal clear tears of salt ran down both cheekbones. Leaving behind intertwining snail trails as they fell. ________ didn't enjoy yelling at him, especially when he was the only supportive person they had outside of the uniform.

"________, I know that this is your life, I'm just trying to grasp onto whatever I can to be able to understand what you go through when you're deployed. You don't know how difficult it is for me. I try to think of anything else but you every time you're fighting but I physically can't..." Eddie's arms lent on the back of the dining room chair, tears of his own splatting on the beige and grey tiles below. "I know it's not the same as what you deal with. Me. If I got shot fake blood would come out, if you do its real. The unbearable pain, salty tears and if you're lucky you'll return to me and your family. I have a job where I can do endless takes if I fuck something up. You have a lifestyle where if you fuck up your comrades suffer..." His voice cracked, shoulders now shaking violently. Eddie had returned from a shoot a month ago, and ________ had just walked through the door from her second tour.

The soldier walked over to the emotional man and wrapped their arms around his torso. Face immediately pushing into his back and the embrace around his torso tightening ever so slightly. "I'm sorry that you didn't get any letters while I was away. I told my superiors not to send them unless I wouldn't return. In which case I had written a final letter should that have happened. I wanted to hand them to you in person. There in your study on your desk. I love you Eddie." Soft yet slightly chapped lips connected with each of his shoulder blades, something that always helped to comfort the poor man when he was down. Another kiss on the side of his jaw, then the corner of his lips. Running a hand over his forearm before going to put the trusty duffle bag in the master bedroom. The man stayed there for a minute longer, only to then run up the stairs to his study.

In front of him, like Lance Corporal Redmayne said, sat a stack of five letters. Each addressed to 'My beloved Eddie'. Another tsunami of tears was brewing, and he hadn't even read what they contained yet. In the left corner sat a small hand written number. The one on top had a small '1', so he opened it first.

Eddie,

I'm sitting in a helicopter right now writing a letter to you. If you're reading this then I've obviously returned home. I'm flying off to my first post. How's Marius doing? I'm still surprised that you let me name him after a character you portrayed. I'm laughing a little, my iconic snort helped lighten the thick air of anxiety in this bird. This is my second deployment, but some Privates are shaking in their boots. I remember when that was me. I can't disclose where I'm going though, classified information. Know that I tell you as much as I can Eddie. I hate keeping secrets from you, my parents don't even know. In fact you know more than they do. I'm about 30 minutes away from touching the ground. I love you. Give Marius plenty of cuddles for me. I'll be home soon. Love you.
