A/N This story is set after episode four because this is the point I think  when Jughead starts to realise he has feelings for Betty. I probably won't write about the funeral or any long scenes Betty and Jughead have together in the TV series though because you already know what happens, but I may reference them so if you're reading this without having watched Riverdale before I'd recommend you go watch before reading.

Betty POV

It's just after third period on Thursday. Veronica, Kevin, Jughead and I are walking along the benches at the back of the school to find Archie sitting alone studying his plays for football.

"Betty you're positively radiating Nicholas Sparks. Tell me everything about this Trev," Says Veronica.

"He's one of Betty's sources. There's nothing romantic in the  the offering," Kevin says sarcastically.

I roll my eyes at them and look over at Jughead. For some reason he looks sulky, and when we sit down he sits at the back and doesn't say anything. I quickly snap back to reality and realise that Veronica and Archie are talking. Valerie comes over and sits down next to Archie.

"So I know miss Grundy was tutoring you," She says

"Understatement of the year," smirks Veronica as our eyes meet. I smile back but my mind slowly drifts back to Jughead. Why would he be upset right now? I shake my head and wrench my mind back to the conversation. This is not the time Betty, I think to myself.

Jughead POV

I know we're supposed to be having a conversation about Archie's music right now but I just can's seem to think about anything else but Betty. I don't even know why it's bothering me that she and Trev are going on a date. I mean it's not even really a date. That's what she said anyway.

I try to tell myself all through lunch that Trev is just a source. That this is just to help with our investigation, but I can't push away that voice at the back of my mind that thinks that's not all it is. I shake my head. Why am I getting so worked up about this anyway? Why do I even care? I've been friends with Betty for a while now. She's best friend with Archie it's natural that I should feel protective right?

I hardly notice as the bell rigs for the end of lunch. I vaguely remember Cheryl coming up to us and inviting us to Jason's memorial and Veronica leaving with her but other than that I seem to have no memory of the conversation we've just had. I stand up and begin to walk towards my next class which is in the C block when Betty calls out to me. I turn around and see her walking a few steps towards me.

"What," I say moodily. Betty looks a little nervous at the tone. I suddenly feel a pang of guilt. I give her a small smile.

"What is it Betts," I say more warmly.

"It's just that... you looked a little upset before so I was just wondering if anything was wrong." I look up at her taken a back. Did I say something or do something? I look into her face, at those wide, pale blue eyes. She really was very pretty.

"What? Oh I guess I'm just a little tired. I didn't get a lot of sleep last night." The truth was that I hadn't really gotten any sleep last night. After the drive in closed I managed to sneak back into the school and find an old cupboard under the stairs that looked like it hadn't been opened in decades.  This was now where I was staying as I couldn't stay at home with me dad because he had a drinking problem and could sometimes be dangerous to live around. This meant that I now had to get up at 5 every morning to use the showers before any other students got to school. Of course nobody knew about this. I had debated on telling Archie but decided against it as he was too busy with his music and football right now.

"oh, Alright," Betty said uncertainly. I could tell that she wasn't totally convinced.

"I'm fine Betty, really." I say again, smiling. "I have to get to class, I'll see you after school." I wave goodbye and start walking towards the C block. It was nice how Betty was always concerned about everyone. It's one of the qualities that makes her such a good friend. She's like a ray of sunshine I think to myself, not realising that I have a small smile on my face. Before I know it I've reached the C block. Reggie and another kid from the football team are already standing outside.

"What are you looking so happy about Jughead," smirks Reggie. I roll my eyes and walk away to get a book out of my locker which is coincidentally almost next to the room I have fourth period English in. The confrontation with Reggie pushes Betty from my mind however and the only thing I'm thinking about now is finding a seat far away from those football goons.
