As we approached the castle fear started to set inside of me and found a little place to rest itself inside my mind as I looked up. The windows were boarded up and vines and moss clung to the stone brick. The entire place had an eerie feeling to it and that feeling lingered through the air deeply surrounding the castle like a shield. I took in a deep breath of courage and continued to the front gates. With each step the fear inside me grew bigger and bigger. I wanted to turn back but I didn’t want to embarrass myself in front of my friends, especially Giovanna I’d look like a complete idiot, she’d laugh at me. I shook my head erasing all of those thoughts and replaced them with thoughts of courage. I stopped just two steps from the gates and looked behind me at Giovanna. She saw me and our eyes met, she gave me a happy smile. I returned a smile with a hint of fear hidden deep within it. I then turned my head back to the gate. I took my first step into the courtyard my heart beating rapidly out of my chest. Then I took another step. I suddenly realized that this wasn’t that bad and I started to walk normally in with my friends, Collin, Jason, Anna, Giovanna, Greg, Rachel, Trinity, and Conner.

“Wow, this place is huge.” Collin said looking up in amazement.

“Well no duh,” Said Jason, “It’s a castle, what else would you expect.”

I stopped in the middle of the courtyard and turned around to face my friends, “Okay,” I said, “Since this place is so big, we’ll split up into teams. Rachel and Anna, you two will go with Conner and check out the east side of the castle. Giovanna, Trinity, and Jason, you three will go check to south,” (Now I know what you’re thinking, why on earth would I be sending Giovanna with Jason and Trinity? Well I think it would be better if she went with them for now) “Collin, Greg, and I will search the north and west sides.”

“Why are we splitting up?” Greg asked.

“Because then we can see the whole castle, and it also makes it more scary.” I said in a spooky tone.

“It makes me feel like I’m part of The Scooby Gang.” Collin said. I could obviously tell Collin thought that it was stupid to split up especially with the way he looked at me.

“Okay then, let’s go.” I said clasping my hands together and smiling. With that we all set off in different directions.

After Collin, Greg, and I left the others is started to think that maybe splitting up wasn’t the best idea. I led the other two, or was at least in front of them. There were doors everywhere on either side of the hallway we were walking down, the wood they were made out of was very worn out and old, it let off a musty smell of rotting wood that traveled down the entire hallway. Torch holders sat on the walls every few feet each one had a stick in them with a black top as though they had just been used recently. “So tell me why we had to come here again?” Greg asked.

“It’s a spooky castle,” I said, “Why wouldn’t we come here. And anyways this is for a project that I’m doing at school.”

“Couldn’t you just look it up on the internet?” Greg complained.

“Look Greg, if you’re scared then why don’t you just go back home.” I said annoyed. After I said that Greg shut his mouth and I was happy. But that didn’t last for long. Suddenly a great howl, or what sounded like a howl, whistled through the halls. I stopped dead and so did Collin and Greg. I wasn’t the fact that I heard the howl that made me stop, it was the fact that it had come from not far behind us.

“What was that?” Greg said, his voice shaking.

“A wolf?” Collin guessed.

“That didn’t sound like a wolf.” I said. A quiet and short growl came from behind us. At that time I didn’t know if I should run or turn to see what was behind us. I was too afraid to even think. After a few seconds I decided to turn. My heart sank and total fear trampled over me like a stampede. What stood on four legs behind Collin, Greg, and I was a grey furred creature with a long snout and a black nose. It had three toes on all feet and a tail was stuck straight in the air. It looked like a regular wolf at first but once it stepped into the light of my flashlight its grey coat ignited in flames and its eyes burned red. Fear grew even more as two more of them spread out on both sides of the middle one, their coat blazing the same. Then the words slipped out of my mouth, “Shit…RUN!” I quickly turned and bolted in the other direction with Collin and Greg following at my heels. Doors swooped past my eyes in blurs of brown and black as I ran. All other thoughts in my mind were wiped away as the instinct to survive settled in and mix with my immense fear of dying. Never have I felt this much fear in my life. And to think that this day started out so well…
