I lay against the rough sand, watching the two seagulls pick at each other. Both fighting for a piece of bread that I had thrown over to them. I know -- a waste of food, but it was amusing to watch them both smack each other with their wings, and pecking at each other's heads. Amusement was rare at times like this, so I'll take what I can get.
"El, I swear you have nothing better to do," Luke chuckles laying beside me. I laugh along with him, not saying anything else. We stay silent before we hear a seagull shriek. The other seagull had won custody over the bread and flying away before the other could stop it.
"Aw, poor little guy."
"They could've at least split the piece in half," Luke scoffed, coughing right after.
"True, but I mean they are seagulls," I plainly explain, not really knowing where I was going.
"Seagulls aren't stupid!" He protests, slamming his fist in the sand, making a crunching noise.
"Then why didn't they split it in half?!" I mock, sounding like a child having a fit.
"Enough," Luke grumbles, not finding a proper excuse. I strum, knowing that I had one the argument.
After Luke had left for the forest, I sat down in one of the seats of the plane trying to figure out the mechanics of Margaret. Picking at the rough strings of the instrument, looking for a tune that sounded pleasing to the ears, rather than hearing something that was similar to nails that were scratching on a chalkboard. Plus I had no idea how people could stand the pain of pushing down on the strings for too long; I can't even stand five minutes, let alone two hours of constant agony.
I had gotten frustrated, and I tried so hard not to smash Margaret on the ground. So I had carefully set Margaret down where she rightfully belonged and zipped up the case, laying the case in Luke's tent. Still keeping an eye on it, just in case (god forbid) something horrible happened to it.
"Case closed," I nod. "Seagulls are dumb."
"Excuse you! Just so you know seagulls are very intelligent thank you very much." Luke had gotten really defensive, and he seemed very passionate about the topic of seagulls, as funny as that sounds, it did seem a bit cute.
"Really? Please tell me, please, please?" I plead mockingly.
He glares at me, but proceeds to tell me anyway, " Seagulls are very knowledgeable birds. They use bread crumbs to attract fish and produce rain-like sound with their feet to attract earthworms hidden under the ground. Badass right? Anyways, seagulls transfer all hunting skills and techniques to their offspring. Very smart birds I tell you." Luke spits out, sounding like he had recited it from a website.
"H-how did you-"
"Did a science fair project on them once," I was about to ask why, but he beat me to it. "Don't ask, it was the fifth grade, my teacher told me to do them. Like who the fuck does a project on seagulls?!"
