Preparing for the trip was a grueling task. We loaded up enough supplies for all of us for the day we would be gone and an emergency medical kit. With the plentiful amount of supplies in the submarine, we launched into the deep depths of the sea to find the recently discovered cup coral.
The submarine submerged into the water with little difficulty and plummeted gracefully towards the bottom of the ocean. Particles of dust whirred past the glass wall of the sub until it looked like brown streaks running away from the metal slicing through the water. I looked over at my fellow colleagues and they smiled back. We were all ecstatic about the possibility of learning about a creature that decades ago we never would have given thought to.
Everything seemed fine until the lights shut off. We all froze in horror as the submarine lurched forward towards a cliff that had been hiding from view moments ago, as if something had collided with our homely submarine. We could not do anything about it, we couldn’t even see until sirens rang in the small vessel and red lights signaled that something horrible was going to come. There was nothing we could do, as we now had no power. Well, we might have if we had thought to put fuel in the backup tank. No one had thought of it though in the excitement of the preparations for our journey and now we were paying the price of our carelessness.
As the vessel finally lurched to a halt, I realized that we had landed inside a cave. The cave was attached to one of the many faces in the craggy trench wall. It had been obscured by large amounts of dust and debris that now swirled in a hurricane around our, at the moment lodged, sub. Our submarine had dived head first into the cave, so we could look out the front at the endless tunnel of black that at first glance almost seemed to have been carved into the walls of the cave. Although, the tunnel was at least forty feet wide and eighty feet high at the tallest part, no creature we have ever studied would care, or even be able, to create this system of endless stream of black. No, I reassured myself, this could never be possible, and if it was who knew what this, thing, would appear as.
I glanced around at my fellow comrades and they all stared at me awestruck and fearful at the dark labyrinth ahead of the vessel. For what seemed like an eternity no one said anything, everyone silently hoping that if we didn’t speak it, then this catastrophe never happened. Finally, the leader of our exploration spoke.
He said, “Nobody needs to panic. What we need to do right now is try to radio headquarters and tell them our situation.”
With that we burst into action, somehow knowing what we needed to do. They radioed our scientific research lab and told them of our situation. With the information we had given them they had informed us that we had been knocked off course and that in a few days they would rescue us. That night our team slept peacefully with light hearts, but if only they would have had an idea of what was to come in such a short amount of time it might have been avoided.
The next morning we all slept in and started passing out the food. I had noticed that it seemed like our numbers had lessened by one since we had first started our journey, but seeing as we were deep in the ocean I hadn’t thought anything about it until that afternoon. I was lying down in my cot when I saw a dark liquid seeping from the top bunk.
Curiously I looked above me and when I did panic and fear gripped the insides of my stomach. One of the people in our crew was strewn across the bed with his neck and torso slashed in a primitive way. His eyes had glazed over while his skin had taken on a pale, sickly green, hue. I rushed out of the bunks into the biggest area of the ship where most of the crew had accumulated.
With my breath accelerated I managed to say, “That man is dead, go check out the bunks.”
With that the people rushed into the cabins in the submarine to the scene of horror I had discovered. Many of the people that had gathered to see what I had found screamed in pure terror. They knew what I knew, someone or something was killing us and there was nowhere to run or hide. We all gathered in the main area of the sub, not wanting to be anywhere in this place alone. After hours of speculating what we should do, we decided we should pair up with a partner so we would never be alone to come to the fate of the man in the bunks. So, with all of the arrangements settled we went to sleep, just wanting the day to be over.
The next morning a scream awoke me from my sleep. Five people lay in the middle of the rooms, all the same way as the first man had been. One of the people that had been slashed and laid down was our leader. Seeing that we would need order if we were going to survive I stepped up to be the new leader.
“Listen, I know what has come to past is horrifying but in a few hours we will all be safe,” I explained, “So, for now we need to stay together in the front, central part of the submarine.”
As, I stepped into the other room, a streak of movement in the cave caught my eye. When I looked harder I saw a muscular outline that looked to be about eight feet high and four feet wide. I couldn’t see many features but I definitely saw two piercing black dots looking at me with great intelligence. Looking into the eyes, which were blacker than anything I could have imagined, I could see a glint of merciless cruelty in them.
Nothing more had happened on the trip, and the remainder of us had been rescued but I never will forget the thing that I had seen. I know deep in my soul that the thing I saw was responsible the deaths of the six people we had brought and the thought of something that awful sickened me. Although, I never will forget those eyes in the dark of the cave and I know, for sure, that they will haunt me in my waking hours for the rest of my life.
Thanks so much for reading, please comment below if you feel to tell me something. I am thinking of doing the story on the point of view on the mysterious creature, so comment your thoughts! Thanks again for reading.
