Chapter One
Sitting out on my white Victorian styled balcony, watching the disappearing moon over-looking the sharp drop of the cliff face my house was perched on, with the gliding grey waves, and the morning fog rolling over them, sending out a ghostly glow. I listened to the last howl of the melodic wolves. I was all rugged up on my cane rocking chair and my home styled Vienna hot chocolate, not wanting to move, knowing my daily routine would have to begin again.
A couple of minutes passed and I heard my gorgeous girl start to stir. I left my retreat, and prepared both of us for our day. First I prepared Gabriella for day-care, and then got myself ready. I tied my long black hair into a loose and messy ponytail, I put on my high waisted denim bleached shorts, and floral t-shirt, with my oversized woollen jumper over the top. Then I got gabby dressed and ready. I packed her Angelina the ballerina day bag with everything that may be needed. She was smiling up at me as I feed her, her breakfast, fruit puree, and cleaned up all the mess, staring at her gorgeous pal blue eyes, which she got from her mum. The sun shining in over the kitchen bench and into the house was already warming me. I picked up Gabby out of her baby chair and flew her around my head making the noises of a plane. She giggled down at me, telling me off for being immature.
Trust my child to already be a smart alec.
"Chop, chop" she demanded "we're going to be late"
"Race you out?" I quirked my eyebrow up at her in question.
I watched as she turned around and dashed down the hallway to the door, nearly knocking over the ceramic white vase on the hall table, she turned the rustic gold door knob, having to get right on her tip toes. She then ran down the windy, white gravelled path to the car and touched it.
Turning back at me as I was locking the door she said "na, na I bet you!"
I just smiled at her.
I unlocked my Mitsubishi and buckled Gabriella into her baby seat and gave her, her bottle of warm milk as always. She looked so adorable in her puffy pink jacket and grey leggings, humming to herself; I tousled her brown mutt of hair, and kissed her forehead. I was truly blessed to still have her.
I reversed out of our gravel filled driveway lined with a beautiful assortment of colourful plants. I drove down the winding streets, all lined with footpaths, shops and filled with quirky buildings in various heights, colours and styles, to get to her to day care, with only a few questions on how much longer it would take, and her continuous humming.
Once I dropped my baby girl at Day-care, she gave me a kiss goodbye and ran off to join the other youngens. It always made me so happy when I saw her getting along with other children, I only wish mum was around to see her growing into the beautiful and kind lady she was going to be.
The owner, Greta, greeted me warmly; it was a family run business. They were loving and kind people who truly loved to take care of the children, and the families, they’ve helped me out through the years to un-repayable debt.
Greta asked "What time will you be picking her up today?"
"Whenever I can leave school and get here" I laughed. But she saw the sad hint in my eye, she can always read me so well. When almost no-one else can.
"Just give me a call before you come, so that I can have everything ready for you."
"Will do. Thank you Greta, you’re amazing" I said as I waved good bye to her and Gabby.
Poor Gabby, she was usually always the last to get picked up, it was just lucky for me that Greta loved her, and was a good friend of our mums, before the accident.
The accident was what was on my mind as I got into my car,
I remember the night perfectly, I just finished grade 9, it was the beginning of the summer holidays. The breeze was soft and warm, carrying the scent of flowers on it. My mum was driving to the hospital as her contractions had just started. I was on my way to meet her. I arrived at the hospital before her. I sat waiting in the corridor by the emergency room with Josh. People in bleached white uniforms were rushing around. The smell of the antiseptic and cleaning products were clinging strongly to the air. One of the radios buzzed, alerting the nurse at the reception area that the ambulance had arrived at the car crash scene. Some drunken drive forgot to give way at a blind spot, going 50km/h over the speed limit, propelling his car into a white Mazda which was travelling along, he was killed instantly. My stomach tightened flipping over and over, making me feel nauseous. My mum owned a white Mazda. Josh grabbed my hand, understanding what I was thinking, his reassurances being drowned out by my need to listen to the radio. It continued. The driver of the Mazda was in a critical stage, they were in need of as many spare nurses and doctors as possible, and a free spot in the ICU. The woman was going into labour before the accident, she was now unconscious and had a suspected spinal injury along with broken ribs, possible internal bleeding and protrusions of bones from her legs; the baby had a fast heartbeat, exceeding the normal rate, but otherwise appeared to be unharmed due to the mother rolling herself up to protect it.
My music started blaring, shaking me out of it, just in time, I let the few stray tears slide down my face before wiping it clear, I pulled away from the curb and headed towards school. Now to face the trauma of High School and some of the back-stabbing bitches who were once my best friends.
