BOOM!
Even in a moment of peace, the war torn country had bombs going off, one by one, until there was nothing left. A couple was caught in the cross fire. A young couple, trying desperatly to survive long enough to wake up to their beloved just one more time.. We were that couple.

It was a horrid war, and although there was hope, we both knew we'd die. It was determined.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The sound of cannon fire shot through the air, and I hoped for the best. That it had come from our side, and that it hadn't hit one of us. Luck wasn't on our side that day.

Perhaps I knew when the blood splattered onto my skin, and perhaps I was hopeful when I felt an unbearable pain spread across my stomach. But I knew for a fact that my heart sank when I learned that the cannon only grazed my stomach. That sinking feeling only grew as the love of my life collapsed to the ground, covered in sweat and gore. The screams that left our mouths echoed through the night, just like the cannon fire.

I bent down and dragged him through the woods, hoping to find a safe place to pitch a tent. He needed medical attention, and my arms were about to give out. Our time was limited.

I tripped over a root as the woods got thicker, bringing us both to the ground. I noticed the hole in my love's stomach went all the way through, there was no way he'd survive.

I tried my best to get the leaves and dirt off of his wound, but he stopped my hands. He brought his own hands to my face and wiped my eyes, then stroked my cheeks. My tears continued.

"P-please, Freddy. P-please don't die." I sobbed, my voice hoarse. He can't leave me, I can't live without him.

"Can you do somethin' for me?" My Freddy inquired in a shaky voice. I nodded ceaselessly, wanting to do anything for the one I love.

"Smile for me, Darlin'." He whispered in his equally hoarse voice. What a request! Asking for a smile, even with the war going on, even when there's thousands of people dying all around us. Smiling is all I had to do.

"Freddy, are you sure that's what you want?" I asked in a watery voice.

"Please, smile."

I could hear footsteps behind us, most likely from another soldier, but I couldn't focus on them, not when my lover was dying right in front of me.

I smiled weakly and stroked his sweat soaked hair, praying that he'd be alright. His voice startled me out of my little trance.

"Don't worry about me, Franny. It'll be alright."

I wiped my eyes a bit, uncertain if I'd heard correctly. "What do you mean?"

He smiled and let out what was supposed to be a laugh, but ended up sounding like a rasping, half choked sob. "In another life. We'll meet again, I guarantee it, just you wait and see! We'll finally have that wedding we wanted, and we'll live in a world without war, together as a family."

"But what about children? Aren't families supposed to have them?"

He chuckled again, though it looked painful. "We'll figure it out, we always do..."

Another tear left my eye as he died in my arms, the sobs that left my mouth over powering any noise I would've heard otherwise. They were soo loud, I nearly didn't hear it when Freddy said "I love you." for the very last time.

I cried soo much, I almost wished I had died alongside him, two dead lovers, wrapped in each others arms. So I didn't plead for mercy when the confederate soldier's came, muttering "Damn fairies." as the shot me in my spine. I welcomed my death, only hoping that Frederick had been right when he said we'd meet again. Another life, that'd be nice. A world where we'd be accepted. A world where a smile was our last hope, where we didn't have to worry about being shot for being the person we are.

A world where we'd survive.
